Joining the Fight
RSDM Works with RU Units on COVID-19 Research
RSDM researchers are collaborating with colleagues at Rutgers and nationwide in the battle against COVID-19. Since March, they have played a role in developing fast, accurate testing for the disease and its antibodies, as well as ways of reducing transmission. Team members have been exploring the efficacy of rapid, point-of-care COVID testing that could yield results in as little as 20 minutes. They are working with New Jersey Medical School's Public Health Research Institute on antibody testing and viral suppression, along with dental and medical equipment supplier Henry Schein in its Test of Tommorrow (T4T) workshop. They skipped dental impressions and campus tours this year, but 20 students who participated in a virtual version of the Summer Health Professions Education Program (SHPEP) still learned to navigate their path to dental school success. "During COVID-19, we're making this the best program that we possibly can,'' said Dr.Rosa Chaviano-Moran, Associate Dean for Admissions. The SHPEP program, founded in 1989, is designed to boost the number of underrepresented minority students enrolling in a health professions school but also includes students from a range of ethnicities and socioeconomic backgrounds. But they were eager to pick up where they left off in March, when classes moved entirely online. Once clinics reopened for non-emergency procedures in mid-June, students began arriving to resume treating patients and learning pre-clinical skills. In pre-clinic this week, where classes are staggered to accommodate smaller, socially distanced groups, first-year students worked on hand skills they had been honing before the spring. LEARN MORE

In the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, many RSDM students are struggling. They face transportation problems, housing issues, lost income, food insecurity, health insurance complications and more. To help relieve these strains, dental students have been applying directly to Rutgers Biomedical and Health Sciences (RBHS) student emergency funds, which provides immediate support for those facing serious problems. You can help RSDM students in need by donating. Make your contribution to the RBHS Student Emergency Fund specifically to reach our dental students. To give, click here.
