Students, alumni clamor to take care of university's cows

BURLINGTON, Vt. (AP) — When the coronavirus pandemic forced the University of Vermont to close and send its students home, the alarm spread:
What would happen to the cows?
The university’s beloved herd of about 100 dairy cows is normally tended by students taking part in the Cooperative for Real Education in Agricultural Management program, or CREAM. And without those students, the fate of the cows seemed to be in jeopardy.
In no time, dozens of CREAM alumni and students clamored to spend their spring and summer caring for the Holsteins.
“I would rather do nothing else than this over the summer,” said recent graduate Claudia Sacks, of Macungie, Pennsylvania.
On a recent hot weekday, she rose in the dark to help milk the cows at 3:30 a.m. By early afternoon she was shoveling out the calves’ stalls. When she sees her favorite cow, Lazlo, she hugs her around the neck and gives her a kiss.
“I’ve learned so much from them,” she said.
“They’ve taught me how to be a kind person and how to love other people. You go into the barn and you see one of the cows licking another cow and it’s just, I don’t know, just a sense of sisterhood almost between them so it’s really lovely to see the family that they’ve formed between themselves but also the family that we can form with them.”

Senate’s HEALS Act vs. House’s HEROES Act
Here's how COVID-19 aid packages compare when it comes to helping agriculture industry.
Just before Congress takes its August recess (Aug. 7 for the Senate and Aug. 3 for the House), Senate Republicans proposed a coronavirus relief package July 27 known as the Health, Economic Assistance, Liability Protection & Schools (HEALS) Act that would give the U.S. Department of Agriculture broad authority to spend an additional $20 billion to compensate farmers and processors for the impact of the pandemic.

DOJ files amicus brief in DFA lawsuit
The United States Department of Justice (DOJ) filed an amicus brief in a lawsuit against Dairy Farmers of America, the United States’ largest dairy cooperative. The lawsuit, filed in Vermont U.S. District Court, alleges that DFA and other cooperatives agreed not to compete for each other’s farmer-members, conspired to share payment information in order to discourage competition and depress prices, and maintained those low prices market-wide by entering into supply agreements with Dean Foods and other dairy processors.

FASS SPC Provides Input on USDA’s AIA
The FASS Science Policy Committee, with support from ADSA, responded to USDA’s Solicitation of Input from Stakeholders on their
Agricultural Innovations Agenda
. The goal of the Agenda is to increase U.S. agricultural production by 40 percent while cutting the environmental footprint of U.S. agriculture in half by 2050. The input focused on the Genome Design cluster, and more specifically on the regulatory barrier posed by FDA’s plan to regulate intentional genome alterations in food animals as drugs.

The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM, previously known as NRC) anticipates the 2021 release the 8th revised edition of the “Nutrient Requirements of Dairy Cattle”, the world’s most highly cited reference on dairy cattle feeding.

will focus on the scientific advancements in dairy cattle feeding used in revising the 2001 edition. NASEM subcommittee members will address the substantive changes in the nutrient requirements and the conceptual approaches used to make those changes. They will report on areas with significant knowledge gaps that still prevent more accurate prediction of the nutrient requirements. We will emphasize the interactive spirit of Discover conferences with structured small group discussions woven into the program, including a demonstration of the software and focused discussions with the speakers.
