Dear Archway Families,

Ready… Set… Go… The school year is here!

Today during Meet the Teacher Zoom sessions, I was able to cruise the campus. As I peered into the windows of classrooms, I saw many smiles and looks of delight. Teachers came out of their rooms between sessions to tell me how heartwarming it was to see their scholars again.

It was back! The air of illuminating joy is back on our campus. The relationships the staff started developing with you and your scholar ignited our teachers. I have no doubt, after I walked down those halls, that even with distance learning we will continue to be a community that values one another.
In partnership, let’s make it a great year!

I leave you with some tips to start remote learning with excellence.
  1. Create an optimal learning environment-A quiet study space where materials and resources are accessible.
  2. Establish a schedule and routines-Set regular hours for learning, breaks, and meals. Maintain sleep routines and wake times.
  3. Communicate-Let the teacher know if your scholar is struggling with a specific assignment or is having technical issues. Read school communications. (emails, Family Newsletter/Friday, Grade Newsletter/see at the bottom of Family Newsletter).
  4. Celebrate the Good-When you see your scholar demonstrating virtuous behavior, delight in it and celebrate with them. (new friendships, love of learning something new, persevering through PE exercises)

2020-21 ANP BUSINESS DIRECTORY

Those who understand Love and Logic know that sincere empathy is the cornerstone upon which the entire house is built. It’s the gift that allows our children to learn wisdom from life’s trials and tribulations, rather than developing discouragement and resentment.

Empathy demonstrates love. Love provides hope.

Hope provides the motivation our kids need to choose what’s
healthy rather than destructive.

For forty years, the Love and Logic message has remained the same:
•  Hope and pray that your kids make plenty of affordable mistakes when they are young.
•  Hold them accountable for these mistakes with sincere empathy.
•  Do this so they can learn when the “price tags” are still small.

Many parents comment, “Empathy is the hardest part! Too often my own frustration and anger get in the way.” Providing empathy requires that we tolerate messiness rather than trying to create a sanitary life for our kids.

In my book, Parenting for Success, I discuss why messiness is necessary for developing the attitudes and skills required for adult success.

Deep in our parental hearts is the wishful dream that our children will enjoy a fairytale life where all issues are resolved cleanly and they live happily ever after. Ironically, this well-intentioned urge often makes it harder for us to provide empathy when our kids need it the most.

Lectures, threats, frustration, and anger provide an illusion of control, a fleeting sense that we’re getting something done. Empathy requires a strong conviction that we cannot fix others, but that life’s challenges are gifts that build maturity.

Thanks for reading!
