Dear CSAN Members and Friends:
An important development to pass along:
Late yesterday, Governor Sisolak announced the temporary suspension of some of the requirements of the Open Meeting Law for public bodies. To be clear, there are still some important Open Meeting Law requirements, but they are greatly reduced for the time being.
For public charter schools, this means that a meeting necessitated by the current crisis will qualify as an “emergency” meaning that your governing boards can meet without having to post three days in advanced. Note, however, that not all meetings will qualify as an emergency meeting (i.e., normal board business) and you should still comply with the three day posting requirement for these meetings.
Crucially, you do not need to meet in a public gathering. You can meet electronically or telephonically without the need to have a physical location somewhere, but must make arrangements for the public to participate (see below).
This is intended to facilitate your school's ability to take valid and enforceable actions in short notice. Here are some of the keys:
No physical location is required for school board meetings,
BUT
schools must provide telephonic or email options for the public to participate; including offering these options to any person, school, or party that that may be required to appear before the school or public body.
Physical posting requirements are suspended, but notices must still be posted to the school’s website and
notice.nv.gov
.
Supporting materials for board meeting are not required to be provided in hard copy. But the name and contact information for someone that can provide supporting materials to members of the public must be include on the school’s notice.
While these are some important highlights, here is the announcement which we would encourage you to review.:
As always, we'll continue to try to keep you updated as things progress.
