2021 Steinke Invitational is a Special Moment for Athletes and Coach Steinke's Family
Kettle Moraine hosted the Steinke Invitational May 7, the first hosted since the death of Brian Steinke in March 2020. Coach Steinke was a marine, three-time individual state titleholder in swimming, a US Olympic Athlete in the Modern Pentathlon, Team USA Triathlon Member, and Wisconsin Hall of Fame Coach.

He spent 50 years of his life devoting time to increasing athlete’s leadership, competitive preparedness, and spiritual stamina. He coached for nearly 30 years at Kettle Moraine High School, teaching history and investing his life to providing for others. In a 20-year period, the Steinkes opened their home to over 300 people in need of support and a place to stay.

His family is pictured below in the collage: (left to right) Kevin Yarbrough (Kettle Moraine Boys Head Coach), Sean Steinke (Brian's son and CMH employee/Waukesha resident), Mary Steinke (Brian's wife), and Jane Matter (Kettle Moraine Girls Head Coach).

Barge rafter, header, double top plate, trimmer, lookout, gable stud; What are we talking about?
Students in the Architecture class can help you with those terms. Although amateurs at framing, they are pretty good at identifying the proper parts and terminology when it comes to the components of rough construction.

Even with the chill of the morning air and the frost warnings, Mr. Bruening’s class is making excellent headway on their shed project. The fury of measuring, cutting, nailing, and fastening has taken this student project to new heights, literally! Last week we were able to place all of the walls, set all of the rafters, and even get the siding on. Not bad for only working 90 minutes per day.

Next up, the roof!
A once-in-a-lifetime demo!
Students in all chemistry classes with Mr. Van Dyke, Ms. Kapitan, Mr. Lewis, and Ms. Beck saw a once-in-a-lifetime demo with liquid nitrogen in chemistry classes. Special thanks to Carroll University for donating the liquid nitrogen and use of the dewar (insulated, vented storage container for the nitrogen) and to Dave Wentworth for bringing in the demo tools and showing the teachers different demos that we can show students. The demo included basic gas laws as well as seeing what happens when you place a hot dog, flowers, racketball, and a lead bell in the liquid nitrogen.

Mr. Wentworth has aptly named the demo, “the coolest thing you’ll ever see.” The liquid nitrogen is at a temperature of -320oF which is cold enough to turn oxygen into a liquid. We were able to attach a balloon filled with oxygen to a test tube, dip the test tube into the liquid nitrogen, and collect liquid oxygen. Students were surprised to see the blue color of that liquid.

Liquid nitrogen allows us to super cool gasses in different situations to show how pressure, volume, and temperature are related. We were able to dunk a clear balloon into the liquid nitrogen and see a massive decrease in volume as well as some liquid oxygen, solid carbon dioxide, and frost for inside the balloon. A fixed volume metal sphere was placed in the liquid nitrogen and students viewed how the pressure changed as the temperature decreased.
