In 2019, the Franciscan Sisters of Allegany in Brazil were invited to open a mission in Maganja da Costa, Mozambique, Africa. After discussion and discernment, the Sisters enthusiastically agreed to accept the invitation and preparations began for several Sisters to embark on the new mission.
With great joy, the year 2022 began with the realization of this dream. Despite delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Sisters Maria Abadia da Silva and Euripedes Irias dos Santos departed Brazil for Mozambique on January 1 and after two days of travel arrived safely in Maganja da Costa.
Let us pray for our sisters Abadia and Euripides as they begin their life and ministry with the people of Maganja da Costa and for Sr. Liliane Araújo Costa who will soon join the new community.
Our sisters are living and ministering with members of Nova Aliança. Nova Aliança is a community of lay men and women, married, single and Diocesan priests. The community of Nova Aliança was founded in Brazil over 25 years ago with the assistance of Sister Teresa Sweeney OSF.
