Study shows high satisfaction and success for
Gavilan College Career Education grads
Career training leads to positive employment outcomes
Gavilan College's Career Education programs got another boost this month with the results of the Career and Technical Education Employment Outcomes (CTEEO) Survey, released by the Office of Institutional Research at Santa Rose Junior College, showing positive outcomes in employment, wages, and satisfaction for Gavilan College Career Education students.
"
Career Education faculty and staff are seeing the results of their dedication and hard work here in the outcomes students are achieving" said Sherrean Carr, Dean of Student Learning and Student Success, Career and Workforce Pathways.
The study queried students who had earned Career Education certificates or degrees, or completed 9 or more units of career training. A total of 622 students were surveyed. Of those surveyed, over 92% reported being satisfied or very satisfied with the education and training they received. 77% were able to find employment closely related to their field of study, with 87% employed overall. Over 66% are now employed full-time and the vast majority found employment within three months.
The wage gains for these students were significant, with their average hourly wages increasing by over $10 per hour following training, representing a 72% gain in earnings.
The report concluded that "completing CTE studies and training -- whether or not a credential is earned, whether or not a student transfers -- is related to positive employment outcomes." ("CTE" stands for "Career Technical Education")

The Board of Directors of the Edward Boss Prado Foundation presented a check for $30,000 to Gavilan College for Career Education scholarships.

These results bolster a recent focus and support for career education from the communities in the Gavilan College district. In August, the Gilroy Foundation announced the creation of a Vocational Career Scholarship fund to provide scholarships for students in Gavilan College career
programs. Then, on September 7 at Gavilan's Centennial Gala, the Edward Boss Prado Foundation donated $30,000 to create a new Prado-on-The Go scholarship fund for students pursuing career training. The Prado-On-The-Go scholarship will enable students to pursue career-based educational programs so that they may "improve their economic circumstances in a relatively short period of time," according to the Edward Boss Prado Foundation Board of Directors.
"We are seeing a renewed recognition of the value and importance of career education, both for our students and our local businesses. These new scholarships will provide opportunities for people in our communities to pursue training for well-paying careers that will make a real difference in their lives," said Dr. Kathleen Rose, Superintendent / President of Gavilan College. "Continued partnerships with generous donors like the Edward Boss Prado Foundation will ensure the success of our career education students throughout the district for years to come"
Gavilan College offers Career Education in a number of fields, and has been adding to the curriculum in recent years. Some of the linger-running programs include the Administration of Justice program, Allied Health (nursing), Aviation Maintenance Technology, Business, Computer Science, Child Development and Education Studies, Cosmetology, and Digital Media. More recent additions include Water Resources Technology, Drone Technology, and Heating Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC). Coming soon will be noncredit career programs in Welding and Dental Assisting.
