The Rev. Dr. William J. Barber II is the President & Senior Lecturer of Repairers of the Breach, Co-Chair of the Poor People’s Campaign: A National Call For Moral Revival; Bishop with The Fellowship of Affirming Ministries; Visiting Professor at Union Theological Seminary; Pastor of Greenleaf Christian Church, Disciples of Christ in Goldsboro, North Carolina, and the author of three books: Revive Us Again: Vision and Action in Moral Organizing; The Third Reconstruction: Moral Mondays, Fusion Politics, and The Rise of a New Justice Movement; and Forward Together: A Moral Message For The Nation.

Every September for the past three years, I’ve walked into the Nevertheless She Preached (NSP) conference. And every time, it’s like walking into an alternate universe. I’ve not found another public space like it – where my gifts and calling are not up for debate, where I’m not one of just a few token women, where I’m not fending off offers from benevolent and progressive men who would like to be my mentor (I’m good, thanks!). Once a year, if only for a few days, NSP is the place where I can lay down my defenses and relax because my gifts and calling and voice and body are embraced fully, without me having to do a thing.

We invite all Alliance clergy to join us on Monday, September 14th at 12 noon ET or 7:00 p.m. ET to learn more about the new Alliance clergy peer group program, Journey Group. This program is being designed to create unique support spaces for our clergy. Based on feedback from debriefing session participants, goals established during the development of CAIRN (Clergy Affiliate Information and Resource Network), and the recent increase in need for clergy care during this time, the CAIRN Leadership Group and Alliance staff are working to launch a pilot program this fall.

A seemingly unlikely subject is taking on unexpected importance in this year’s U.S. presidential election – the actual state of religious liberty in our island neighbor Cuba. Nowhere is this clearer than in Florida, where more than 1.5 million Cuban Americans reside among an estimated 14 million registered voters.

Voting is one key part of being a responsible member of our society. It is one way we can shape the policies of our country regarding health care, education, foreign policy and more. It is also important to encourage others to vote, as this strengthens our bonds with each other and builds our democracy from the ground up.

Walker Leigh Knight, founding member of the Alliance of Baptists, who passed away on December 1, 2019 continued his principle-focused legacy with an estate gift to the Alliance received this summer. A letter accompanying the gift written by Walker L. Knight, Jr., reads: “The rest of the family – brother Ken, sisters Jill and Nelda – and I know how much the Alliance of Baptists meant to our father, and his part in its founding makes it one of his most important legacies.”
