Dear Families:

Winter has finally arrived this week!

A big shout out to our Choir and Orchestra students for their performances this week.  I want to especially recognize and thank John Myszkowski, our Choir Director, and Tim Binger, our Orchestra Director, for all their work in preparing their students and the performing arts space for the concerts.

The Community/Action projects are underway. 8th graders should have their groups and topic pretty well finalized and will be finding out who their project supervisors are very soon.  Please take this opportunity to ask your student about their project and how it will impact the community.

Continue to let us know if we can do anything further to assist your student in reaching their full potential and brilliance.

Sincerely,

Jason Boll
Interim Principal

Drop Off/Pick Up Safety Reminders
We are currently looking at ways to improve this process both before and after school. For everyone's safety we are asking that you do NOT park in the lot to drop off your students. This causes a safety concern for students as well as further slows down the line to allow for crossing.
Winter Break Extended to a Full Two Weeks - No School Dec. 20-21
The start of the 2021-22 school year has been a challenge for everyone as the global COVID pandemic continues. Students and families, teachers and staff have been working hard to return to in-person learning.

For the mental and physical health and well being of all, the School Board unanimously approved a calendar modification adding two days to winter break in order for everyone to re-energize. Winter break has been extended to a full two weeks and now includes Dec. 20 and Dec. 21 as no school days. School will resume on Monday, Jan. 3 as originally planned.

Community/Action Projects Begin
This week all of our students started to dive into a project to help a need in a community. 8th Graders started their Community Project.

For the Community Project, 8th graders will be working with a group of 1-3 students on a project of their choice.   8th Graders will be picking their groups and topics next Wednesday It is a student driven project with time built into the day to collaborate with team members.

6th and 7th Graders started an Action project with their Advisory class. The Action Project's goals are to work collaboratively as a class to make a change in a community.  All projects are in the brainstorming phases.  Please ask your student what community they are thinking about helping, what needs does that community have, and how can they help that community?

Projects will be completed by Feb. 11th.
To mine or not to mine.... that is the Question!
6th graders in Mrs. Setten's science classes recently participated in a Town Hall style debate about the opening of copper-nickel mines in Northern Minnesota.

First, groups created presentations to share the perspectives of eight different organizations in Minnesota in order to learn about the benefits and drawbacks of opening the mines.

After learning about all of the different perspectives, each student wrote a personal response about why they support or oppose the issue. This project involved researching, planning, presenting, and using evidence to formulate an argument. It was really impressive to see them in action!

The following students decided to mail their personal responses to Governor Walz, Lt. Governor Flanagan, and/or the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources's public forum on the Copper-Nickel mines. How inspiring to see our students using their voices to advocate for what they believe is best for our environment, communities, and state! Kudos Orioles!
