JANUARY 2019 NEWSLETTER
Letter from the Chair
Shari Carlozzi, Director of Safety Services at WTI & NWIR Chair
What does 2019 have in store for you? Maybe 2018 was such a fantastic year that you would like to see it continue on, or maybe you are anxious for a new start in 2019. Whatever your feelings, maybe the best way to kick off the new year is to review this past year:

Did something or someone inspire you? I have seen so many acts of kindness by individuals and groups of women that not only took my breath away and brought tears to my eyes, but made me realize what we are really here for…to help one another. If someone has inspired you, tell them!

Association Management Update
Ellen Thorp, Executive Director
Elizabeth Miller, Member Services Coordinator
In early November, we announced the launch of our MemberClicks association management system (AMS), sometimes referred to as a member database. The AMS will help with the work of keeping our memberships connected. You will be able to update your profile, search other members, find contact information for other members and several other services that we’ll be rolling out in the next few months. In addition, the National Women in Roofing AMS is going to be the workhorse that will collect member dues and support event registration and payment.

This change of member database systems is a recognition of the growth of NWIR over the past two years and has been a substantial investment of financial resources as approved by the Board and significant human resources on behalf of the staff of NWIR. So pardon our dust, as we’ll be doing ongoing development over the next few months. But we invite you to come see what we’ve started, to update your profile, answer a couple of questions, and update your profile picture. Details here.
RECRUITMENT
Michelle Boykin, Rackley Roofing; NWIR Recruitment Chair
Please send in your photos on the roof!! We are always seeking photos, videos, and stories to share. Keep an eye out for the Recruitment Toolkit which will be published soon and can be used within your company or NWIR Council to help recruit women into the roofing industry.
MENTORING
NWIR Mentoring Committee
One of NWIR’s four pillars or goals is Mentoring. The Mentoring Committee exists to empower women in our industry by encouraging mentor/mentee relationships and develop avenues to bring women together to share thoughts, best practices and coaching opportunities for career growth. The Mentoring Committee has developed content for the many Networking & Mentoring Receptions that NWIR has hosted over the past few years. Their most recent endeavor has been to take their experience of planning and hosting networking events and create a Mentoring Toolkit that can be used by NWIR Councils, corporate women’s groups, and even adapted for 1:1 mentoring relationships.

Webinar: Advantages of a Multi-generational Workforce
Date: January 24, 2019
Time: 12:00pm Eastern

For the first time in history, five generations are working side by side, each with different leadership, communication and career development styles. Whether you’re part of a multi-generational family business, or part of a generationally diverse team, understanding what motivates each generation and how to communicate with each other will help you thrive in this diversity and leverage the competitive advantage.

Understanding the circumstances, attitudes and values that influence each generation and their skill sets can lead to a dynamic team. Our multi-generational panel will discuss these differences and skill sets, highlight the strengths of each generation and their natural roles within your organization, and review the blueprint of successful multi-generational teams. More details and registration available on the NWIR Education page.
Leveraging the Multi-Generational Team
In a male dominated industry and a world filled with gender pay gaps and me too hashtags, we must each contribute to changing men’s perspective of women.  Find out how in the latest Work / Life Balance blog from your Education Committee.

2018 Holiday Gathering
Local women in roofing gathered on Wednesday, December 12th to celebrate the holidays, reflect on what they’re thankful for this year, and learn more about roofing. Hosted by GAF, the party started with some snacks and networking before everyone jumped into Steep Slope and Commercial Roofing 101 demonstrations, courtesy of the GAF CARE team. Some of us even had a chance to take part in the action. Jennifer Keegan helped everyone translate this learning experience to the challenging real world application of decorating roofs on gingerbread houses. There were some innovative approaches to edible roofing, and everyone had time to unwind and connect with each other.

We had a wonderful year filled with events of all kinds, and is looking forward to what 2019 brings! The next event on the calendar is Wine Down Wednesday, on January 16th, and we hope to see you there!
NWIR Ohio Council
As we continue to empower women in our industry to actively attain new levels of career growth, development and accomplishments, we understand that it takes a great deal of drive, fortitude and personal effort to make great things happen. We are happy to announce that two tremendous forces in our industry are reaching new heights in their passion for this industry:

Mardee Billingsley has been elevated to the position of VP WTI, Global Operations. In this role, Mardee will continue to oversee all of WTI, but have an increased emphasis on growing the WTI platform globally. Mardee has already begun working with WTI teams in Western Canada and the UK to do just that. In this new role, she will lead the US Business Ops and Sales Support Offices as well.

Erika Dahl has been elevated to the position of Director of WTI Regional Operations. In additional to having responsibility for the WTI Regional Business Managers, Erika will work on regional strategy and implementation.

Tremco recognizes great potential in their employees and supports the growth and development of both women and men as part of their commitment to excellence in our industry.

Please join us in congratulating Mardee and Erika!

NWIR Tampa Council
Thank you to GAF Tampa for hosting a tour of your facility in October. Members were welcomed with gifted hard hats and an informative tour of their shingle manufacturing plant and testing facilities. The GAF staff shared their knowledge and expertise on the manufacturing side of dimensional and 3-tab shingles. The science behind their products was fascinating. We finished up with a fabulous lunch and discussions of the Breast Cancer Walk.
Our wonderful members, Miriah Akers, Dawn Holsinger, Camille Austin, Kim Sanford (breast cancer survivor), and Christina Smith represented the Tampa Council at this year’s Tampa Breast Cancer Walk. The ladies, with some of their families, walked with the theme “What Unites Us, Ignites Us”. These women are trail blazers within the roofing industry and we are so proud to have been represented by them. Thank you, ladies for uniting us with this important cause. Have you done your monthly breast check?
Thank you to our dedicated board members and Elite Roofing for hosting our most recent board meeting. Elite gifted some of their fun swag for the ladies to enjoy. Kim Sanford (Elite Roofing), Dawn Holsinger (Delta Rep Group), Camille Austin (Elite Roofing) and Christina Smith (Suncoast Roofers Supply) and Hilary Morgan with Cotney Construction Law (not pictured).
