Graham and Annie are nearing 30 years of married life, a golden couple, the centering force and long source of envy in their circle of friends and acquaintances. When Graham dies suddenly, Annie is lost without her “north star.” Sadly, she soon comes to discover Graham’s infidelities which sends her spiraling, questioning if she ever really knew him. The relationship between Annie and Frieda, Graham’s first wife, and between both women’s stepchildren is particularly poignant. The writing is visceral, the story so personal, very nearly like I was one with the characters. Such a beautiful and utterly engrossing story about marriage, family, healing, forgiveness, and all the happiness and sorrows entwined.
This is a book I thought on for a long while after the last page.

If you’ve read or watched Everything Is Illuminated, written by Safran Foer’s son, this book should interest you. Like many children and grandchildren of Holocaust survivors, Esther Safran Foer has spent years attempting to fill in the blanks in her history and to make sense of the way her parents lived their post-Holocaust lives.

Although her son’s novel was fiction, it was based on his family’s search for their lost past. This is the true version.

This might be the most impressive debut graphic novel I have read in a long time. First of all the coloring is brilliant, and follows similar tones throughout. Second of all, the story is very unique and comments on what it means to remember trauma through the generations. Hughes imagines being able to go back in time to witness her own grandmother in the Japanese Concentration Camps in the United States, living alongside and within that experience. It goes in and out of the present day and is simply an excellent story with beautiful artwork.

Author Linda Sue Park enjoyed reading the Little House on the Prairie books when she was growing up. She set Prairie Lotus in the same time period with a half Chinese half white 14 year old girl who moved with her father from California to the Dakota territory in the 1880s.
Hanna finds it difficult to fit in as she tries to get an education and become a dressmaker in her father’s shop.

Alice is a small pig who lives in Paris with her grandmother. Alice enjoys grandmother’s Crème Brulée! She also enjoys many solitary pursuits like making lists, drawing pictures, and reading books. At times Alice wishes she had someone her own size to talk to, so she makes a plan to find a friend. This book brings joy with its sweet story, pretty artwork, and cute touches... en Français!
