Mental Health Awareness Week
The NYSPHSAA Mental Health Awareness Week starts today!

The goal of the initiative is to encourage schools to provide training to athletic administrators, coaches, and student-athletes, to help them learn how to identify signs & symptoms of mental illness, break the stigma associated with it, and provide resources to those who need them.

As an association, we would like you to join the initiative as we believe athletic directors and coaches have a lasting impact on the lives of our student-athletes. According to the Mental Health Association of New York State, early signs of mental illness are often mistaken for typical characteristics of childhood and adolescent development. As a result, being able to recognize the signs and symptoms of mental illness in your student-athletes is imperative.

To join the initiative, NYSPHSAA has provided a toolkit to make it easier for schools and athletic departments to participate. The downloadable toolkit and presentation can be found on the Safety & Research page of the NYSPHSAA website (on the top left side of the page). The link is provided below. This year, our focus is on highlighting positive mental health strategies!

NYSPHSAA Expanding Lodging for
Fall State Championships
As we navigate through COVID to return to normalcy, the Association plans to fully conduct its state championships for the 2021-22 school year.

One challenge NYSPHSAA is addressing in advance of fall sports getting underway is lodging at state tournaments. Many member schools and sections have indicated they would like to move to double or triple occupancy for their student-athletes while staying at hotels during events (no longer four to a room).

We are asking member sections, schools and coordinators to communicate room block increases now for their section sending teams or individuals to a state tournament. It is necessary to get changes in your typical lodging plans now to ensure teams will have enough rooms before it becomes too late. Member schools may contact the NYSPHSAA Office or Section Office.

Study Help Needed
Take a Short Survey from the NFHS
“The Impact of Restarting High School Sports on The Health of Adolescent Athletes.”

We hope you will encourage your student athletes to take part in this study by completing a short survey.

The objective of this study is to document the effects that participation in organized sports has on the physical activity, quality of life and mental health of adolescent athletes during the COVID-19 pandemic. Researchers have previously found that the cancelation of school and sports in spring 2020 was associated with significant decreases in physical activity, quality of life and mental health (see our studies here, here and here).  The research team is hoping to survey athletes one year later to evaluate the impacts of restarting sport participation. Importantly, they hope to also include athletes who have and have not been able to restart participation in order to directly evaluate the impacts of sports for adolescents.

To participate, high school and club sport athletes (age 13 to 18 years old) are asked to complete a short, anonymous, online survey. Participants are asked to get permission from their parents, after which the survey asks a series of questions regarding current and former sport participation, level of physical activity, anxiety, depression and health related quality of life. I have attached a copy of the survey so you can see the questions we will use to collect the data.

Please know that this research has been approved by the University of Wisconsin Institutional Review Board and is funded by a grant from the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS).

Data collection runs through May 31, 2021.

You should also be aware that the study team is not asking for any personal identifiers (name, address, contact information etc.) from the students who complete the survey.  In addition, the survey data is collected in such a way that the study team cannot identify the internet service provider or computer address for any respondent as well.

Our goal is to get as many responses as possible from adolescents across the US in order to provide timely information to help inform ongoing discussions regarding the continuation of youth sports during the COVID-19 pandemic.
