Dear Network Friends,

As 2021 comes to a close, I’m mindful of how fortunate we are to live in Vermont. As the Covid-19 pandemic continues to spread, even here in Vermont where the majority of residents are vaccinated, I’m thinking about our most vulnerable neighbors and hoping we can all do our part to keep each other safe.

The end of the year is always a time of reflection, and a time to look forward to what a new year will bring. More snow, I hope? Frozen ground so logging crews can work in the woods? An end to wild lumber price fluctuations? Less chaotic supply chain delays? So many wishes for 2022!

Despite the challenges we find ourselves facing, let’s not forget that the pandemic has also brought a new awareness of the value of local wood products. Consumers are asking where their wood comes from, and businesses are seeking out local suppliers. And, the jump in demand for wood products has encouraged new businesses to form, like the start-up we are featuring this month: Treeline Terrains. These recent Middlebury College grads are combining high-tech mapping with local wood to create one-of-a-kind models of our beloved Green Mountains – and beyond. Check out their story below.

Another start-up in our region that has me hopeful for the new year is Timber HP by GO Lab, a Maine-based company making wood insulation products. The Flexible Capital Fund recently invested in GO Lab and did a great story on their plans for 2022. Check it out here

As many of us prepare to spend the next few days eating more than we should, I hope you find time to walk off the calories in the woods taking in the beauty of our forests in winter.

Most of all, I wish you all a very joyous holiday season filled with family and friends.

Stay safe out there,
Christine
