Four Rivers Heritage Area seeks nominations for its
Sixteenth Annual Heritage Awards
. These awards recognize individuals, organizations, partnerships, programs and products that contribute significantly to the community by interpreting, promoting, preserving, researching and/or supporting our historical legacy.
In 2019, nominations are invited in ten categories, including the Heritage Leadership Award, which goes to an individual for significant and long-lasting contributions to local history and heritage. Self-nominations are accepted.

or by calling the Four Rivers Heritage Area office (410-222-1805). The nominations deadline is
October 11, 2019
.
A heritage area awards committee will review and evaluate nominations; awards will be presented at the Four Rivers Annual Awards ceremony on November 7. Tickets:

Antebellum Women Tell All in their Diaries and Letters
For the majority of merchant and upper class women during the Antebellum period in the South and Border states, marriage and family defined their way of life. The arena in which they could make life choices was small – at least compared to ours today. So the decision about whom to marry was important, not only to themselves but often to their families as well. Whether they could marry for love, or were persuaded to marry strategically to shore up their family’s wealth, was a question they dealt with in their most intimate diaries and letters. Join Historian Dr. Jean Russo as she explores the great risks that colonists undertook to create a better future than they could expect in Britain. Profound challenges confronted both individuals and Maryland society as a whole: a hostile disease environment, a skewed sex ratio, the lack of protective kinship networks, and the absence of a stable social hierarchy. Only over several generations did survivors gradually establish the foundation for a predominantly native-born population, and only with this demographic shift did the odds significantly improve for individual adventurers and their descendants seizing the opportunities that Maryland offered.

Public Open House and Preview of Gresham Estate

London Town is working with Anne Arundel County Recreation and Parks to manage a NEW historic property. Come out to preview this new place, discover its remarkable story, and learn about London Town’s plans for its future.
Located about 10 minutes from London Town’s main site, the Gresham Estate was constructed by John Gresham II in the late 1600s, the same time that London Town was beginning to thrive. Over the years, the Estate has been owned by several families, most notably Commodore Isaac Mayo, who lived in the house until his death in 1861. Most recently, it’s been restored by Leon Johnson of Johnson Pools and his family.
This is an opportunity to drop in to see Gresham Estate anytime between 12 – 4 pm on Sunday, October 13th. $10 – General Admission, $5 – Member, Free – Children ages 7 and under. Registration recommended. Learn more

This Week's Dates for Escape London Town: Ferguson Tavern!

The year is 1763. You and your travel companions wake to find yourselves locked inside Ferguson Tavern. While your memories of the prior evening are a little fuzzy, you quickly realize that your travel papers and money are missing and that your ship is leaving in just one hour! Can you make it out in time?
Escape London Town: Ferguson Tavern
is the first escape room experience created by Historic London Town and Gardens. Escape rooms are real life interactive games where players must uncover clues, solve puzzles, and crack codes if they hope to escape in an hour or less. For this experience, we have turned the Lord Mayor’s Tenement (one of our reconstructed colonial buildings) into Elizabeth Ferguson’s tavern. Working in groups of 4 to 10 players, you will have the opportunity to match wits against Elizabeth to see if you can escape her tavern.

Galesville Square Dance this Week!

The next Galesville Square Dance is on Saturday, October 12th in the beautiful, wooden-floored Galesville Memorial Hall, 952 Galesville Road, Galesville, 20765.
Janine Smith will teach and call the dances. Music will be provided by Leah Weiss (fiddle), Gary Wright (guitar), Bill Schmidt (banjo), and Ann Porcella (bass). Sit-ins are welcome on fiddle, guitar, banjo, and mandolin.
Optional (and always delicious) potluck starts at 5:45pm—bring a dish to share.
The dancing goes from 7pm to 10 pm.

Also, given the nature of research, we cannot guarantee your problem will be completely solved in one day, if at all. However, the professional genealogists will do everything that they can to assist and guide you in your research.

Introducing 40 Under 40: Young Artist National Showcase:
MFA and MD Hall invite all artists (ages 40 and under) residing in the United States to enter any 2-D or 3-D work to be considered by juror Jose Ruiz. The selected works will be exhibited in Chaney Gallery at Maryland Hall for the Creative Arts from January 4th to February 29th, 2020. Learn more

Terms of Entry:
- All entries must adhere to MFA general guidelines as well as the terms of entry specific to the exhibit as listed below.
- When entering the exhibition you will be asked to accept the Terms of Entry. Any entry that does not follow Terms of Entry and General Guidelines will be subject to rejection regardless of the Juror’s decision.
Work
- A maximum of 4 original works created within the past 3 years may be entered.
- Works previously exhibited in a juried show at Circle Gallery are not eligible.
- Works may not exceed 72 inches in width, height or depth, including the frame, unless otherwise specified for a particular exhibit.
AWARDS
- Cash awards total $500. Award contributors and recipients will be listed in the exhibition catalog.

Call for Panelists for the Maryland Heritage Areas Grants Program
|
|
The Maryland Heritage Areas Program (MHAP) is seeking panelists to review grant applications for the 2021 fiscal year.
Serving as a panelist is a unique opportunity to learn about and support Maryland’s historic, natural and cultural heritage resources, get an inside look at MHAP’s grants process, and gain insight into what makes a good grant proposal. It is also a way to give back to the broader heritage community of Maryland! Last year, MHAP awarded $5 million in grants to heritage tourism, historic preservation and heritage education projects, and we expect similar funding levels for the 2021 fiscal year.
Panelists will:
· Review grant applications through an online reviewer portal
· Complete a scoring rubric for each application reviewed
· Participate in two Grants Panel meetings to discuss the applications
· Help make recommendations for final funding decisions made by the Maryland Heritage Areas Authority
Overall the panelist role requires an estimated commitment of between 30 and 50 hours (depending on your previous experience reviewing grants) over the course of 2 – 3 months (primarily April, May and June of 2020). Learn more

Arts Council Offers Mini-Grant for Heritage Preservation Initiatives and Events
|
|
Your group must be a non-profit in good standing, and have NOT received Arts Council funding previously. The types of projects envisioned can be events, exhibits, or lectures, held in or be about an historic site, activities that engage the public with heritage resources and serve to raise awareness, access or appreciation of local heritage, historic sites, buildings and culturally valuable spaces. Maryland Historical Trust is Hiring!
|
|
The main purposes of the position are to directly administer the Maryland Historical Trust's Capital Grant Program within the Office of Preservation Services, Division of Historical and Cultural Programs; and to provide technical preservation information to the public and to local and state agencies for these programs. The position directly supports the Agency mission to enhance Maryland's historic sites and traditions and preserve Maryland's heritage resources.
