PRESIDENT'S CORNER
Atascadero and the surrounding areas have embraced the many opportunities available at our library, verified by the door count of ~14,000 patrons per month! The library continues to be a valuable resource offering equal opportunity to all citizens, from securing passports, doing computer research, using meeting rooms, books, DVDs, and participating in art classes. Library patrons enjoyed a busy summer with a variety of workshops, events, craft classes, and reading times geared from preschool through adult level. Atascadero Library has become one of the cornerstones of a healthy community.
I attended the Friends Presidents' Council member meeting in San Luis Obispo (SLO) recently. Collaborating with presidents from SLO County Friends groups, the SLO Library Foundation, and SLO County Library Director Chris Barnickel was interesting and inspiring. The future of public libraries is very promising! I'll share more on this exciting subject at a later date!

Remember to view the FOAL website, created by Leigh and Clare Livick, featuring many fall programs and events for all ages. Many classes have a maximum number for attendance, so sign up early! See photo of my fused glass project from Sheri Klein's class. The coaster features my Boston terrier, Sophie. Really! Sheri offers fused glass classes at Atascadero Library throughout the year. It's always fun learning a new art form or skill and your local library is a great place to start!

fans from all over the County gathered at the Pavilion on the Lake in Atascadero to hear the author speak at the debut of the Friends of the Atascadero Library "Author in the Spotlight" series. See is an American writer and novelist and
her beloved New York Times bestsellers Snow Flower and the Secret Fan, The Tea Girl of Hummingbird Lane, Peony in Love, Shanghai Girls, Dreams of Joy, and China Dolls, has brilliantly illuminated the strong bonds between women. More than 250 people attended An
Evening with Lisa See on Thursday evening, October 3, 2019, attesting to her popularity as an author.

Women, her newest novel, as her example. Her initial interest in the female sea divers of Jeju Island was piqued over 8 years ago when she saw a small article in a magazine.

Lisa See graciously signed books before and after her talk. Many in attendance purchased copies of the author's titles from Barnes & Nobles who was selling books at the event to have signed.

Jeannie Malik, President of the Friends group and DWOS Event Producer, held orientation on July 31
st
for the new community stars and choreographers participating in DWOS 2020.
Prime Time Atascadero: Season 11
will be directed by Molly Comin and her assistant Christina Troxel. Participating organizations and their representative community star dancers are:
Atascadero Performing Arts Center Committee
(Kate Auslen), Central Coast Dance Foundation - Artistry in Motion (Marcy Eberle), Friends of the Charles Paddock Zoo (Steve Robinson), North County Economic Foundation - Leadership North County (Dianna Vonderheide), Sheriff's Advisory Board - Atascadero Police K9 Foundation (Jerel and Holly Haley), Templeton Community Library Association (Melinda Reed). The program is rounded out by Michelle Harms and Sean Kennedy, dancing for the Friends of the Atascadero Library. Professional choreographers for 2020 will be Charlie Bradley, Kara Frenzel, Chris Harmon, Michelle Harms, Judie Magonacelaya, Justin McMillan, Frank Sanchez, Christina Troxel, and Bob Woodard. Voting began on August 1st! Look for their donation pots with photos and event details in numerous businesses around town.
The community star dancers and choreographers were introduced at "Dancing in the Streets" on August 17th. You'll have another opportunity to see them in the Colony Days parade on Oct 5th in Atascadero and the Pioneers Day Parade on Oct 12th in Paso Robles.
DWOS will be hosted by Friends of the Atascadero Library on 3 nights: March 26, 27 and 28 at the Pavilion on the Lake, with Opolo Vineyards providing fabulous wines and Pacific Harvesting Catering preparing the buffet dinner. Online ticket sales will begin January 20, 2020.

ALICE'S BOOKSTORE NEWS

Greetings from Alice's Bookstore
Happy Fall to all of you fans of books! As the days are shortening and the weather
cooling off it is definitely becoming time to read more books and I know just the place where you can stock up for the winter, Alice's Bookstore!
Have you been in to see the selection of books that concentrate on the American Southwest? Their topics range from turquoise jewelry, Native American pottery and basketry, the canyons and home places of our Native Americans and more. Look for them on the shelf under the big window. You will be pleased. Next month famous photographers and museums will be featured.
We also continue to have the Bag Special - buy a Friends canvas book bag and 10 items of your choice for just $10! This makes a great gift anytime of the year but especially as we also head into the holiday season.
We so appreciate your continued support of our store, via cash, book donations, or your time, and hope to see you again soon. We are also happy to answer any questions you may have about volunteering in the store!

GEORGIE ARNOLD: In Memoriam
 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Georgie Arnold. As a long-time member and volunteer for Friends of the Atascadero Library, Georgie was a dedicated to supporting her community. During her tenured membership, Georgie also served on the FOAL board for many years, and was a member of the early library expansion committee. She also joined with the events committee, orchestrating activities like National Library Week.
Georgie was a committed volunteer for many years at the Book House sales at the old Library and then at Alice's Bookstore in the new Library.
She loved Red and always wore red tops and Silver jewelry. She and her husband Dave, who passed away before her, were both avid SCUBA divers and dived all over the world. She is survived by her mother and her beloved rescue dog Mimi.
We remember Georgie's outstanding service and dedication to Atascadero Friends of the Library and will miss her presence at the library and in the community.
