Interpreting Forestry Economic Contribution Reports: A User's Guide
State agencies and Extension professionals often employ IMPLAN software and associated data to conduct economic contribution analyses of the forest sector. Strategies for understanding basic terminology, aspects of IMPLAN software, and the difference between economic contribution and economic impacts, among other concepts are discussed in this resource. Why Do Leaves Change Colors?
This may seem like an elementary question, but Dr. Howard Neufeld, a professor at Appalachian State University, is here to shed some light on the subject! In this article, Dr. Neufeld shares some of the science behind the color changes, with things like weather and genes influencing the change. First Christmas Tree Scouting Videos Released
Christmas trees? But it's November! The NC State Christmas Tree Extension Team have created high quality scouting videos to teach middle management workers on Christmas tree farms in western North Carolina how to effectively scout for scales, other problem pests, and beneficial insects. They've just released their first video, Making Wreaths to Avoid Scale, just in time for the greenery/wreath production season. Take a look at the full article here and check back for future videos.
Applications now open for WTREX 2020!
The 4th Women-in-Fire Prescribed Fire Training Exchange (WTREX), which will take place next spring (March 30-April 10, 2020) in southeastern Virginia. We hope that you, your friends and your colleagues of all backgrounds, genders, and professional affiliations will consider applying to gain some hands-on burning experience, whether you have never held a driptorch before, if you're working on a RXB1 taskbook, or anything in between! Applications are due December 13, 2019 (please note only about 25 people will be selected). Stay tuned for more information.

Join local fire and forestry professionals to learn all about prescribed fire! The day will include a provided lunch, educational activities, and a live prescribed fire demonstration. Join local fire and forestry professionals to learn all about prescribed fire! The day will include a provided lunch, educational activities, and a live prescribed fire demonstration. November 4, 2019 (Tues), 6-8:30pm. Johnston County Forestry Landowner Meeting. Location: Johnston County Ag Center, Smithfield, NC. North Carolina Cooperative Extension in Johnston County would like to invite all landowners to attend the Forestry Landowner meeting on Monday, November 4th at the Johnston County Ag Center. The meeting will start at 6:00 pm with a sponsored meal. Topics covered include forest markets and selling timber, timber taxes and conservation plans, and more. Click here for details about the event.

November 6, 2019 (Th), 9am-3:30pm, Environmental Education for K-8 Educators: Project Learning Tree. Location: Guilford College, Greensboro, NC. Join other K-8 classroom and nonformal educators as we explore activities in the Project Learning Tree K-8 Curriculum Guide. This workshop qualifies for Criteria I or II in the EE Certification Program (K-8). Registration is required and the deadline to register is October 30th, click here to register. December 5, 2019 (Th), Women's Chainsaw Safety Workshop. Location: Falls Lake State Recreation Area. This course will cover the basic elements of safe chainsaw operation. Topics will include parts of a chainsaw, personal protective equipment-including parts, proper fit, and importance, chainsaw maintenance, and chainsaw use. More information will be available soon so be sure to check back on the Extension Forestry website.
