The Historic
New Orleans Collection
For more than 150 years, artists from around the world have captured their impressions of the French Quarter. The exhibition French Quarter Life: People and Places in the Vieux Carré gathers 22 paintings from THNOC’s permanent collection to showcase the many views and experiences that have inspired artists through the years. From the bustle of the French Market to the jazzmen of Preservation Hall, these artworks explore the streets, buildings, and people of the French Quarter through time and a variety of techniques.

Audubon Nature Institute Announces Plan for Audubon Butterfly Garden and Insectarium

Audubon Nature Institute is taking the opportunity to improve current practices and examine strategies for long-term viability as it navigates the financial impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic. One of the first steps will be moving Audubon Butterfly Garden and Insectarium from the U.S. Custom House on Canal Street to Audubon Aquarium of the Americas on the river, building a combined experience that reenvisions the guest experience and educational programming.

Work will begin as soon as November and the Butterfly Garden and Insectarium will not reopen in its current location.

Audubon typically welcomes 750,000 visitors over the summer months and is estimating nearly an 80% decrease this year due to limited capacity, pausing groups and field trips, and decreased tourism visitation. Audubon's estimated loss of revenue directly related to its facility closures from March to June was approximately $21M. Audubon has reduced its staff by close to 75%, laying off over 500 full time and part time employees.

"We have made some difficult decisions, always with an eye on the future," said Audubon President and CEO Ron Forman. "With stability as our top priority for our future, we are streamlining business operations. The move will present a multitude of cost-savings and revenue-generating opportunities. As our rental commitment to the federal government comes to a close, Audubon will save approximately $1 million a year."

Audubon is working aggressively on the design of the new downtown experience. Capital funding has been secured to complete a number of projects including the move of the Butterfly Garden and Insectarium to the Aquarium campus. This funding cannot be used to help close the gap in Audubon's current operations budget or to support operations.

The project is expected to include approximately 17,000 square feet of new space constructed inside the existing walls of the Aquarium and approximately 47,000 square feet of renovated space. Work will include permanently decommissioning the Entergy Giant Screen Theater, allowing space for a 5,000-square-foot multi-use events space on the first floor. A new shared lobby will modify and improve the existing theater lobby, providing access to the second floor. Moving the Butterfly Garden and Insectarium to the Aquarium campus will also create a faster and more convenient entry flow for guests and remove travel time between the facilities.

The new exhibit space will be a combination of relocated exhibitry from the Butterfly Garden and Insectarium and new custom-fabricated exhibitry. The feature exhibit will be a glass-enclosed Butterfly Pavilion on the second floor.

"While we are saddened by the reality of temporary closure, the move of the Butterfly Garden and Insectarium will present cost-savings and fresh new experiences throughout the downtown campus for our community," said Forman. "Audubon's revitalized downtown campus will give us the opportunity to feature our wildlife conservation story and our commitment to positively impact the natural world."
It is strongly recommended that visitors pre-purchase admission online in advance.

It was the Etruscans, not the Romans who brought winemaking to Tuscany some 3000 years ago. The The ancient Etruscan civilization flourished in central Italy between the 8th and 3rd century BCE taking advantage of the the ideal soil and growing climate in the Tuscan hills. The Etruscans were traders and one of their top commodities was wine - in fact there is now evidence that the French learned the art of winemaking from the Etruscans (!!). Unfortunately much of their culture and even history was either obliterated or assimilated into that of its conqueror, Rome. But luckily, the art of winemaking continued in the region for thousands of years and the wines are now some of the most sought after in the world.

Out of all of the regions we have visited in Italy, Tuscany is where we have spent the most time. Our friend and partner on our Italian customer trips, Antonio Molesini, was born and raised in the the town of Cortona, on the eastern border of the region. We base many of our trips from this magical setting and have explored almost every wine DOC/DOCG in the region. Tuscany is also where my love affair with wine began in 2004 - I fell head over heels for the region, the country and its diverse wine culture and it continues to hold a special place in my heart.

This week we'll focus on Tuscany in our 3 pack offering a baby super Tuscan from the Montalcino region; a Vernaccia from city of towers, San Gimignano and a Sangiovese rosato. If you are interested, call us at 504 304 0635 to reserve yours and/or add it to your pick up or delivery order for tomorrow! The package of wines is $52 plus tax with the 3 pack discount

This Week at Swirl Wine Bar

Here's the lineup:

Il Poggione Toscana Rosso (sustainable, indigenous yeasts) - Sangiovese, Merlot, Cabernet grapes from the renowned Brunello producer, this is a delicious, approachable red that's a super value. Loads of mulled red and black fruits, spice, leather, and dried tobacco aromas and flavors. It's balanced, round, medium to full-bodied, textured and just a smoking good mouthful of fruit. Put it in the refrigerator 30 minutes before you drink it with your favorite pasta dish, pizza or pork.

Le Calcinaie Vernaccia di San Gimignano (certified organic, low sulfites) - 100% Vernaccia from Tenuta Le Calcinaie, a beautiful small estate, situated just 3 km from the town of San Gimignano. It's fresh, fragrant and minerally with lemon peel, orchard fruit and white flowers beautifully entwined in this super-expressive, vibrant white.

La Spinetta Il Rosé Di Casanova  (sustainable, practicing organic) Equal parts Sangiovese and Prugnolo Gentile from a small single vineyard site. It is a store favorite, every vintage but the 2019 is one of the best yet and it goes down easier than water.  Tart and juicy, with citrusy grapefruit and tangerine with stone fruit - it's got great acidity and a minerally finish. Crazy good Tuscan rosé, a category that's hard to find!

call the shop if you want to reserve them or just stop by and ask for the Tuscan 3 pack! $52 plus tax.

Coolinary restaurant specials return this year

A yearly campaign that aims to boost New Orleans restaurants during their slowest months is returning this year with some changes.
Coolinary runs from Aug. 3 through Sept. 15. As in previous years, it offers special two- and three-course lunch menus for $20 or less and three-course dinner and brunch menus for $39 or less at a variety of restaurants across the city.
This year the campaign has opened participation to include delivery and take-out options, as well as counter service restaurants. Many restaurants have pivoted to these services as the COVID-19 pandemic lengthens.
“Our beloved restaurant community has been severely impacted by the pandemic crisis that began during their busiest season and the Coolinary campaign is a wonderful opportunity for us all to contribute to their success.” said Stephen Perry, president and CEO of New Orleans & Company. “The addition of take-out and delivery to the program will help our residents support these establishments in whatever way they feel most comfortable. We hope this is a time where we can rediscover New Orleans’ authentic spirit and fall in love with our hometown again.”

Construction on the first St. Louis Church in New Orleans began in the 1724 and was dedicated in 1727. This church, along with much of the city at the time, burned to the ground in the great fire of March 21, 1788. Work began in 1789 on the second church, shown here in an 1842 lithograph by Adrien Persac.
The new St. Louis Church was larger than its predecessor, with a low, flat-roofed building with hexagonal bell shaped towers on either side of the main entrance. The larger central spire was added in 1819-1820. As much of the city was rebuilding, work on the church dragged on. By some miracle, the church was spared in the second great fire on December 8, 1794.
This church remained in service until 1849 when it was determined that it had deteriorated so badly that it had to be restored.

This was the Godchaux's Clothing Store, c1900, it was on the corner of Chartres-Canal Sts. The beautiful building was razed in 1969.

Mules and the Marigny Creole Neighborhood Walking Tour
Come see the home of the stars – the stars of the world-famous French Quarter mule-drawn carriage tours, that is! Visit the mules in their stalls, and see first-hand their care and work routine. You’ll also discover the intriguing history of the buildings that comprise the stables (one was once a funeral home) and learn the history of Royal Carriages, the oldest family-owned carriage company in the country.

After the stable tour we will walk through the Faubourg Marigny, which is the third-oldest neighborhood in New Orleans, and just steps from the French Quarter. Once a plantation owned by one of New Orleans’ most colorful characters, “The Marigny” has it all: exquisite architecture, riveting history, ties to Voodoo, quiet tree-lined streets and rowdy Frenchmen Street for live music venues. (Frenchmen Street is what Bourbon Street used to be – lots of great music and good food, without the strip clubs and t-shirt shops.) We’ll show you the authenticity of a Creole neighborhood as it is now and describe for you how life here would have appeared over the last 200+ years.

Some of the highlights of our tour include:
The home of Charles Laveau, father of Voodoo Queen Marie Laveau
Classic New Orleans architecture – Creole mansions, cottages, and shotgun homes
Bernard de Marigny House – site of the original plantation home

St. Anna’s Church kicks off “Tip Jar” Music series to help local musicians survive COVID pandemic shut down
Thursday, 6 p.m. Live-stream concerts provide safe, open place for local artists to get income and promote the city’s music legacy

Every Thursday at 6 p.m., individuals can tune into the facebook page for St. Anna’s Episcopal Church and enjoy New Orleans musicians do their thing in the hopes you will contribute to their individual online “tip jar” to help support their art, announced the Very Reverend William H. Terry, Rector, St. Anna’s Episcopal Church.
“St. Anna’s has a history of supporting New Orleans musicians, especially since 2005 and the levee failure following Hurricane Katrina,” said Fr. Bill. “We provide a venue for them to play as well as offer them food and other services as The Mission to Musicians.”

“Once again, New Orleans musicians are hard pressed to produce income because of the COVID pandemic and closure of music venues. Our church offers use of our audio-visual and electronic equipment, as well as our space, to help them bring in some income through their own online tip jar,” said Fr. Bill.
Event sponsors are also sought to help every performer at least receive a baseline payment of $100 to $500 per gig, depending on the size of the music group. The program is made possible with the help of Jack Craft, an artist with Sweet Crude, and St. Anna’s Place staff.
         Additional upcoming performances include:
  • ·      The Jazz Vipers, a traditional jazz band, on Sept. 10
  • ·      Pianist Andre Bohren on Sept. 17
  • ·      The Storyville Stompers on Sept. 24
  • ·      Jazz guitarist and vocalist John Rankin on Oct. 1
  • ·      Singer/songwriter Michael Doussan on Oct. 8
  • ·      And Indie bands Alexis and the Samurai and Free Feral on Oct. 15 and 22 respectively.

12 ANGRY MEN

ON STAGE
until
SEPTEMBER 13
A 19-year-old man has just stood trial for the fatal stabbing of his father. “He doesn’t stand a chance,” mutters the guard as the 12 jurors are taken into the bleak jury room. It looks like an open-and-shut case—until one of the jurors begins opening the others’ eyes to the facts. “This is a remarkable thing about democracy,” says the foreign-born juror, “that we are notified by mail to come down to this place—and decide on the guilt or innocence of a man; of a man we have not known before. We have nothing to gain or lose by our verdict. We should not make it a personal thing.” But personal it does become, with each juror revealing his own character as the various testimonies are re-examined, the murder is re-enacted and a new murder threat is born before their eyes! Tempers get short, arguments grow heated, and the jurors become 12 angry men.

While state officials are cautiously optimistic there will be some form of limited-capacity fan attendance at LSU games this fall, tailgating before the game may be off-limits to a lot of people.
Tens of thousands of people flood LSU's campus on game days, even if they do not have tickets to the game itself.
"If we can have fans, we are probably going to urge a lot of the people who do not have tickets to the games to not come to the campus,"
For the games themselves, even if they have to limit Tiger Stadium to 30-50 percent of its maximum capacity, they're hopeful that at least some fans will get a seat in Death Valley.
"The wonderful thing about football is that it is outside and we know that this virus does not survive as well outside as it does inside,"
The SEC's 10-game, league-only schedule is set to begin on Sept. 26. LSU will play its standard West Division opponents, and the Tigers added a home game with Missouri and a road game with Vanderbilt to fill out the schedule.
LSU's Week 1 opponent was announced earlier Monday with the Tigers hosting Mississippi State to open its 2020 season on Sept. 26.
Take a look at the full schedule below:

UNDETERRED BY THE PANDEMIC, 2020 CRESCENT CITY CHAMBER MUSIC FESTIVAL
TO BROADCAST FOUR FREE PUBLIC CONCERTS OCT. 2-11

The Crescent City Chamber Music Festival (CCMF) will not let Covid-19 stand in the way of its 5th anniversary performances this year. CCCMF will go on as planned with live performances that will be streamed to audiences from event spaces in New Orleans from October 2 to October 11, 2020.

This year’s Festival is titled "In the Darkest Night Shines the Brightest Light," and features four unique, virtual programs broadcast live and free to the public on Facebook and YouTube over the ten days of the festival. Once again, Founding Artistic Director and New Orleans native Luke Fleming will bring some of the world’s most talented chamber musicians together for audiences in New Orleans, and now, online anywhere in the world. Audiences will be treated to performances from the world-renowned classical musicians of the Manhattan Chamber Players, a collective of New York-based musicians who have delivered compelling performances of the most moving pieces that the chamber repertoire has to offer year-after-year at CCCMF.

In addition to the 12 stellar classical musicians bringing live chamber music to New Orleans this October, this year’s festival features Andrea Casarrubios, a prominent cellist praised by the likes of the New York Times, who will perform on all four concerts and also debut brand new material written specifically for this year’s festival.

“The pandemic forced us to reimagine the Crescent City Chamber Music Festival in a way that musicians and audience members can enjoy the performances in a safe and socially responsible way,” said Luke Fleming. “Virtual audiences will be treated to one-of-a-kind concerts held in four wonderful spaces across the city of New Orleans, viewable on platforms like Facebook Live and YouTube Streaming.

Should it be deemed safe by local government, the 2020 CCCMF may allow limited, socially distanced, masked seating on a first-come first-served basis, but this has yet to be confirmed. Notice will be given of this possibility at least two weeks before the festival begins,” Fleming said.

Community outreach is an important part of the festival’s mission. Since its inception, festival musicians have performed privately for audiences at nursing homes, hospitals, schools, homeless shelters, and other helping organizations across the Greater New Orleans area. This year, the festival will stream to community members of New Orleans via Zoom, Facetime, and Skype — providing a meaningful and safe online concert experience on a one-on-one basis to residents of nursing homes, retirement communities, and hospitals, as well as in educational spaces.
