This Sunday we will celebrate two holy days:
All Saints
and
All Souls.
These days celebrate both the “famous Saints” of the Church (e.g., St. Mary; St. Paul; etc.) and the “common saints” of our everyday lives (e.g., people who have supported us in our life and our development as Christians).
All Saints
(the commemoration of the “famous Saints”) was celebrated by the early Church within 300 years of Jesus’ return to Heaven. It was celebrated in the Middle East and elsewhere.
All Souls
(the saints important in our individual lives) began to be celebrated about 1,000 years after Jesus, and seems to have begun in France.
The worship services look very similar to the regular Sunday service with a couple of notable exceptions:
1) We take time during the Prayers of the People to name the saints in our lives and to light a candle in memory of each of them.
2) We will use incense. Incense serves two functions: to symbolize our prayers going up to God as the smoke ascends; and to take us into a deeper place of worship by engaging our sense of smell as well as our ears, eyes, and hearts.
For those who are allergic to incense, we are limiting the use of it to the altar area. We want your senses engaged in a positive way.

Several weeks ago, while assisting at the mid-week mass, I had an amazing experience and I wish to share it with you. It seems the appropriate time since this week we celebrate All Souls and All Saints. You may or may not have noticed that when I pray the Lord’s Prayer at the altar, I place my outstretched hands with my palms facing upward.
One Wednesday while praying, I felt someone touch my hands. While continuing to pray, my mind was racing: Did I just feel someone touch my hands? No, it must have been the movement of the air around me. No, I really did feel someone touch my hand. No, I couldn’t have. I continued the rest of the service without missing a beat but continued to question what I felt. I took several days to ponder this before I concluded, yes, I truly felt someone touch my hands.
This week (October 30) at the noon mass, we talked about those who have gone before us, and we prayed for all who have died. Fr. Bill mentioned in his homily that those who have gone before us, that “Communion of Saints,” continue to pray for us. I have been blessed, by God’s grace, to have prayed with one of those saints…. they reached out to touch my hands and let me know that they too are continuing to pray for me.

STEWARDSHIP SUNDAY

Watch for a Stewardship brochure to arrive in your mailbox very soon. This annual campaign is necessary to establish Ascension's working budget for the upcoming year. This year's theme is
Faithful - With Little, With Much, With All
.
We are called to faithfully and graciously invest the gifts that God has given to us (i.e., time, talents, treasures), whether big or small, many or few. When we are faithful “with little,” God will honor us by allowing us to be faithful “with much,” meaning that God will increase our effectiveness and broaden our ministry landscape.
Please consider how much of your time, talent and treasure you can give back to God through Ascension. Pledges received by
Commitment Sunday – November 17
– will help us plan a realistic budget to open the doors, pay the bills and more in 2020. (NOTE: Old pledges do NOT carry forward; a new pledge form is needed each year.) Extra brochures and pledge forms will be available on tables in the church.

SPECIAL DIOCESAN CONVENTION
Friday-Saturday, November 1-2, Winchester
The Special Convention for The Episcopal Diocese of Lexington will address three specific things: 1. Elect deputies and alternates for the 2021 General Convention; 2. Approve a budget for 2020; 3. Affirm a collective vision for our diocese, after input from all corners of our diocese. In addition, one additional area has been added to the scope of the Special Convention: the Election of the 8th Bishop of Lexington. You are invited to attend! See details at

BELLS OF PEACE
to ring November 11
In 2018, "Bells of Peace" was launched by the World War I Centennial Commission as a special remembrance on the centennial of the World War I Armistice. Tens of thousands of communities, churches, organizations and individuals all over our nation and even in other countries came together for a moment of reflection to honor the people, events, sacrifices and consequences of the "War that Changed the World".
Last year Ascension's bell rang in unison. If you would like to ring the church bell this year on Monday, November 11, at 11:00 a.m., please contact Father Peter.
It is a means of showing respect and reverence to the horrific, the heroic, and the consequential. In order that these events do not fade back into the mists of obscurity, a National Bell Tolling is again planned on the 11th hour (local), of the 11th day of the 11th month. For more information, see

KENTUCKY VOICES
Friday, November 15
This annual fundraiser for the Kentucky Conservation Committee (KCC) will be held in Ascension’s parish hall with Kentucky authors/filmmakers. The evening includes a wine and cheese reception; authors will have books and prints on hand for signing. A donation of $20 is suggested for admission (or FREE with a new or renewed KCC membership, suggested donation $40).
The mission of the Kentucky Conservation Committee is to provide a trusted voice of the public in Kentucky’s capitol and throughout Kentucky, effectively advocating for protection, restoration and sustainable use of natural resources for the equitable benefit of all citizens in our Commonwealth.
