MAYOR DEMINGS' DIGEST

As we continue to face the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic , it is encouraging to see so many people in our community following the Local Face Coverings Executive Order . Health and science experts support the use of masks. Beyond the rational reasoning, it is simply the right thing to do . Our public service campaign aims to “get everyone covered.” By wearing a facemask, you are protecting others … and when others wear a facemask, they protect you. Learn more at ocfl.net/WeGotYouCovered .

Along the lines of everyone doing the right thing, Orange County is helping to ensure that our local businesses comply with CDC guidelines and the Executive Orders. The County’s Strike Teams have visited more than 250 businesses since July 22. The good news is that more than 80 percent of businesses have been in compliance. The teams work to help businesses acquire the tools needed for them to operate safely, providing facemasks, hand sanitizer and safety signage. For more information, visit ocfl.net/BusinessResources .

The resour ces to help our residen ts and businesses through the pandemic are directly related to the Census. An accurate count gives our County the resource allotment we need for federal funds, hospital planning and other related needs. Have you filled out your 2020 Census? If not, it is imperative you do so now. Visit my2020Census.gov  for more information.

Also, if you have recovered from COVID-19 and are able to give blood, our hospitals are in desperate need of convalescent plasma donors. Let’s all put our actions where our hearts are and make a difference to save lives. Please continue to keep each other safe, strong and informed.

HURRICANE SEASON

We urge everyone to prepare for hurricane season as some hurricanes have already hit other states. Many residents have prepared early by picking up free sandbags from our self-serve sandbag program. So far, the program has given away nearly 35,000 sandbags to residents. Residents also receive free face masks and hand sanitizers when they pick up their sandbags. The program runs through August 1. Visit ocfl.net/storm for information. Thank you to our Public Works and Parks staff.

KUDOS
Celebrating milestones and achievements is definitely a challenge in the pandemic. Our Human Resources Department was up to the challenge though and hosted two “Curbside Employee Service Awards” where 31 Orange County employees who had more than 20 years of service were recognized. The celebration was safe and fun. Thanks to all our employees for your service.
