One Text - Many Voices Each week 2-3 students in Mrs. Gelman's Honors Chumash class are sent a few pesukim (sentences) from the Parsha (weekly Torah portion) of the week.  Each student writes up a paragraph analyzing the pesukim using either a medieval/classical commentary, a modern commentary, or their own original commentary. Additionally, each week a faculty member offers his or her view on the same pesukim. From the desk of our S.T.E.A.M. Lab Our STEAM students began learning all about the human body. We looked at how our bones and muscles work to help us stand and move. We looked at the three big jobs of our bones - making blood cells, helping us move, and protecting our organs. We set up body based centers and had a visit from Dr. Patti Savrick for our ECE2-ECE4 students. Popol Vuh Middle school students are wrapping up their unit on Mesoamerica by creating a shadow puppet show based on the Maya creation myth, Popol Vuh. The project entails reading portions of the original text, converting the narrative into a storyboard and script, and designing articulated paper puppets, based on depictions of the story's characters from the archaeological record. With the stage set, the students will perform their Popol Vuh shadow puppet show, video record it, and edit a final version.

Bekiyut Learning Initiative For many years RMBA has participated in Yeshiva University's National Bekiyut Learning Initiative. Students learn a Masechet (tractate) of Gemara and prizes are awarded to students with high scores on standard periodic tests. Rabbi Block's Advanced Gemara Elective class reviewed the first pages of Masechet Makkot in preparation for their first exam of the year next week. Masechet Makkot deals primarily with laws of the Jewish courts and the punishments which they may administer. Compare and Contrast Ms. Rantz's 2nd grade traditional class were excited to jump back into the swing of things this week and enjoyed using their comparing and contrasting skills to analyze different versions of fairy-tales.

Sugar Skulls Eighth-graders learned about the cultural traditions of Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) this week by creating examples of  calaveras  (sugar skulls )  through the art of resposé and metal chasing. The lesson also included a reading and writing component that traced the holiday's origins in Mesoamerica and its migration to the U.S. during the Chicano Movement of the 1960s.   Doodle for RMBA The votes are in for our spirit shirt design winner and in the end, it was too hard to pick just one winner! We decided to combine parts from 4 students' designs to create this year's design for the t-shirts. The 4 student winners were: Maya Diner (6th), Gaby Brown (6th), Elana Yanowitz (4th), and Asher Goldstein (3rd). Congratulations to all our participants and stay tuned for information on how to get your own spirit t-shirt soon.

Professional Development Lower school teachers Bonnie Blumberg, Roza Gross, Ziyona Rantz and Lower School Judaic Studies Principal Rivkie Gottlieb attended a workshop at HISD given by Marcia Tate (pictured above) to learn all about brain growth instructional strategies so that students can better retain information and enjoy their learning. Go Stars! The varsity boys basketball team will participate in a tournament in Memphis beginning today, Thursday October 31. The first game is scheduled for today at 4:30 p.m. versus the highly ranked Hillel Heat. Count Me In Count Me In Inc is a city wide program that was started over 11 years ago and serves families in need in Houston as well as other cities that have been hit with a natural disaster that impacted their lives .    Join us Monday, November 11 from 10-2 p.m. at the Merfish Teen Center (9000 S Rice) to participate in sorting Hanukkah gifts for Houston children in need. Register Here Students in grades 6-12 can come without adult supervision. The  Week at a Glance  is a snapshot, but does not reflect any changes made after that date.  Middle School Girls Basketball The MS Girls opened up their season with a close game at Holy Spirit Episcopal. They will travel to Cornerstone Christian on Tuesday. Please check the calendar for all other dates and times.  Middle School Boys Basketball The 5th/6th grade boys will play their first game on  Tuesday, November 5  at Cornerstone Christian.  High School Girls Basketball The HS Girls opened their season with some tough games for week one of the season. They will continue that trend next week when they travel to Emery at 6:00 on Tuesday. High School Boys Basketball The HS Boys opened up with two big victories to open the season. They look to continue their success Thursday in the Cooper Invitational.
