A Note From Angela
Dear CASA Supporters,
I hope you are enjoying the cooler weather and beauty of Colorado in the fall. CASA continues to be busy! Our final advocate training class of 2019 gets underway next week, and so far we have served 455 children since our fiscal year began on July 1. Your tremendous support makes this possible and we are extremely grateful for your compassion and determination to help every abused and neglected child in our community.
We are excited to announce the launch of our new CASA Business Partner program. As many of you know, CASA of the Pikes Peak Region serves the 4th Judicial District which includes both El Paso and Teller Counties. Kari Dimmick, a resident of Woodland Park recently joined CASA as our Teller County Program Manager and is based out of our office in Woodland Park. She works directly with the local court to ensure children in Teller County receive CASA advocates when they need one. Our Supervised Exchange and Parenting Time (SEPT) program is active in Teller too, allowing us to ensure a safe environment for children to visit their non-custodial parent when there is a court order for supervised visits.
CASA hosted a Light of Hope fundraising breakfast on September 25 in Woodland Park where approximately 100 people from the community generously raised over $30,000 to support our Teller County programs. As long as child abuse exists, our work is never finished, but we are thrilled to have programming and amazing supporters in Teller County.
As you may be aware, National CASA launched a new branding campaign. It is called "Change a Child's Story" and it replaces the "I am for the Child" branding. CASA of the Pikes Peak Region has joined forces with other local CASA organizations in Colorado to raise awareness of our mission and the new branding statewide. It is our hope that by the end of 2020, there are 2,020 new volunteers across Colorado, including 200 new advocates right here in the Pikes Peak Region. You may have noticed some billboards around town, or heard some new radio spots, communicating the statewide goal.
As you approach the busy holidays, I would like to take this opportunity to thank you again for your compassion for children who have suffered abuse and neglect at the hands of those they trust the most. The holidays can be a joyous time, but unfortunately can also be a time of increased stress that can overwhelm parents and care takers. This increased stress tragically increases child abuse.
Please stay alert this holiday season and watch for signs of increased stress or possible abuse in families with whom you connect. Child abuse knows no boundaries - it happens everywhere. If you suspect abuse, please contact the Colorado Child Abuse and Neglect Hotline at 1-844-CO-4-KIDS (1-844-264-5437). The hotline is available 24 hours every day.

If you are 70 ½ years old, you are required to withdraw from your IRA annually. You could avoid paying income tax on those funds while also helping abused children in our community by making a qualified charitable distribution (QCD) from your IRA directly to CASA of the Pikes Peak Region. Please consult your tax professionals to learn about making a QCD.

BUSINESS PARTNER SPOTLIGHT: Covington Homes
It all started at a church nonprofit fair back in 2009. That's when Grace Covington decided to become involved with CASA of the Pikes Peak Region. Fast forward a decade, and Grace and her husband, Ron, are still doing everything in their power to change the stories of children right here in the Pikes Peak Region. The couple's business, Covington Homes, is a $25,000 Business Partner of CASA which means they are providing an advocate for upwards of 18 children per year. Please

MISSION MOMENT: Jeremiah's Story
It was two days before his fifth birthday when little Jeremiah was found wandering the streets alone, with adult shoes on. His mother was strung out; she didn't realize he had left the house. When the Colorado Springs Police Department arrived, they found an unclean home plagued by substance abuse and domestic violence. The house was littered with drug paraphernalia, and mom and dad were completely lacking the skills needed to raise their son. Jeremiah entered the child welfare system that day and spent his fifth birthday in a foster home.
