Project Update
Project Data Reflects an Increase in Participation in DUI MAT 2.0
The numbers are trending upward in key areas including DUI MAT clients and prescreens, compared to DUI MAT 1.0.

13 DUI Programs were added to the project in 2.0 for a total of 40 providers in 58 locations. To date there are 134 people who have joined the voluntary program, four who have taken advantage of the newly released High-Risk Participant (HRP) program, and 17,785 prescreens completed between April 1, 2021 and September 15, 2021.

The November webinar topics included a recap of the CADTP Fall Conference, a review of the data, new HRP program, and project deliverables, along with what to expect at a site visit. Guest speakers include Kathleen Calkins of Vivitrol and Anna Keiderling of KC Services, a DUI MAT Provider in Orange County. Download the slide deck here. HHS Secretary Becerra Announces New Overdose Prevention Strategy
Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra announced the release of the new HHS Overdose Prevention Strategy, designed to increase access to the full range of care and services for individuals who use substances that cause overdose, and their families. This new strategy focuses on the multiple substances involved in overdose and the diverse treatment approaches for substance use disorder. The overdose crisis has evolved over time and is now largely characterized by deaths involving illicitly manufactured synthetic opioids, including fentanyl, and, increasingly, stimulants. Since 1999, the rate of overdose deaths has increased by over 250%.

The nation’s COVID pandemic made the nation’s drug overdose epidemic worse. This issue brief
highlights media and other reports showing increases in drug overdose mortality and other concerns relating to access to evidence-based care for substance use disorders, patients with pain as well as harm reduction services. The news articles and reports below cite data from multiple and varied sources, including national, state and local public health agencies, law enforcement, emergency medical services, hospitals, treatment centers, research journals and others. Every state has reported a spike or increase in overdose deaths or other problems during the COVID pandemic.

Featured MAT Expansion Partner
The MAT Expansion Project includes over 30 projects, all supporting the DHCS initiative to reduce opioid and polysubstance overdose deaths and improve treatment opportunities for those with substance use disorder. Young People in Recovery is the MAT Expansion Project highlighted this month.
Young People in Recovery (YPR)
Young People in Recovery is a National Initiative with local chapters in States. YPR is a MAT Expansion Project partner. Locate a local, California, chapter and contacts here.

Young People in Recovery (YPR) in California is a recovery support services organization focused on creating recovery-ready communities throughout the nation for young people in, or seeking, recovery.

YPR has partnered with DHCS to launch YPR chapters and life-skills curriculum programs to individuals in recovery from opioid use and substance use disorders.

To Date, YPR has served 2,800 Californians across its programs and chapters in the state, and has held over 215 events. We look forward to continuing to serve more Californians and to making all California communities recovery-ready.
YPR envisions a world where all young people have the resources they need to thrive in recovery from addiction to drugs and alcohol.

The DUI MAT Integration/Outreach Project 2.0 is one of over 30 projects to receive State Overdose Response II (SOR II) funding in support of the overall goals of California's MAT Expansion Project. DUI MAT 2.0 will build upon the success of DUI MAT 1.0 and will help to fulfill the objective to Transform entry points for individuals with opioid and poly-substance use disorders and create effective referrals into treatment.
This project is a result of a partnership between DHCS and CADTP through California’s State Opioid Response II (SOR II) Grant funded by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) and The California Medication MAT Expansion Project.
