Black History in Medicine
The Good Samaritan Hospital is believed to be the first private, independent hospital in the United States to have been built exclusively for the treatment of Black people in America.
Following intensive effort from Jane Renwick Smedberg Wilkes, a leading philanthropist in the community, and the Episcopalian Church, the foundation was laid for the hospital on December 18, 1888. It was officially opened on September 23, 1891, with 20 inpatient beds. Learn more about the Good Samaritan Hospital.

Love Your Heart This Heart Month
According to the CDC, over 659,000 people die of heart disease each year in the U.S. The term “heart disease” refers to several types of heart conditions that affect the structure and function of the heart. Studies show that young adults are increasingly at risk of heart disease due to other health conditions that also develop early such as, hypertension, high cholesterol, pre-diabetes, or diabetes. Some ways you can lower your risk factors for heart disease are:
  • Take medication as prescribed
  • Eat a healthier diet
  • Get regular physical exercise
  • Get a proper amount of sleep
  • Reduce stress levels

Stress is a major factor that can contribute to unhealthy eating habits, lack of physical activity, and poor sleep. That's why, it's important to take steps now that can make a difference later in life. UCLA Health has developed a free mindfulness app that has guided audio and video mediations as well as weekly podcasts that focus on different themes.
