North Metro Fire Department: Winter Safety Presentation
Wednesday, November 13, 10:30-11:30 a.m.
Baby, it's cold outside! When the temperature drops, older adults run a higher risk of health problems and injuries related to weather, including hypothermia, frostbite, and falls on ice and snow. Like most things in life, it is better to be prepared. Come learn about a few precautions everyone should take during this time of year. This class is free and no registration is necessary.

Alzheimer's: Holiday Hints for Those Living with Dementia
Wednesday, November 20, 10-11:30 a.m.
Behavior is a powerful form of communication and is one of the primary ways for people with dementia to communicate their needs and feelings as the ability to use language is lost. However, some behaviors can present real challenges for caregivers to manage. Join us to learn to decode behavioral messages, identify common behavior triggers, and learn strategies to help intervene with some of the most common behavioral challenges of Alzheimer's disease. Register by calling 1.800.272.3900.

Cop Talk
Wednesday, November 20, 11:15 a.m. - 12:15 p.m.
Broomfield Community Center Lobby
This gathering brings police officers and the community members they serve together over coffee to discuss issues and learn more about each other. Members of the community can ask questions, raise concerns, or just say hello and enjoy a cup of coffee with us. This class is free and no registration necessary.

AARP Smart Driver Course
Thursday, November 21, 10:30-11:30 a.m.

You may qualify for a multi-year automobile insurance discount by completing the course (check with your auto insurance carrier for details). This course is instructed by an AARP volunteer. Fees: $15 per person for AARP members; $20 per person for non-members, payable by check or money order to AARP. Register online at  B-REx.com

Turn your future years into your BEST years. Join others for a monthly conversation on the topics that are important to those who are aging. Easy Ride Transportation

Senior Services will be closed the following days in November:
Tuesday, November 11, in observance of Veterans Day
Thursday, November 28, in observance of Thanksgiving
Friday, November 29

Easy Ride is a transportation service for Broomfield residents 60 years of age and older or individuals with a qualifying ADA disability. A client information form is required prior to using the service. For further information, please go to our website or call 303.464.5534.

While there is NO COST to the rider, the Title III Older American Act grant that we receive from the Denver Regional Council of Government (DRCOG) requires riders to be informed about the option to make voluntary contributions. These contributions along with our grant allow us to provide this valuable service and helps to meet the growing demand for transportation in this area. You can make a contribution over the phone at 303.464.5535, or by mail to: Broomfield Easy Ride, 280 Spader Way, Broomfield, CO 80020. Drivers can not take money but do have envelopes available for your contribution.

Ride Changes and Cancellations
If you need to cancel or change any part of your trip, please give us as much notice as possible. The more notice you provide, the more likely we can make the requested trip change or offer a newly opened schedule spot to someone on our waiting list. A major request change is essentially a new request. You must reserve your trips at least two business days and up to two weeks prior by calling 303.464.5534.

No Show/Late Cancels
It is very important to cancel when you don't need the trip you booked. If you do not cancel your trip at least 24 hours ahead of time, it is considered a "late cancel". If we arrive to pick you up and you don't take the ride, it is considered a "no-show". When you "no-show" or "late cancel" for a scheduled trip, other individuals are impacted. Chronic last minute cancellations/no shows may jeopardize your future riding privileges. If the above suggestions are followed, Easy Ride Transportation will be able to provide more rides to those in need.

Ride Confi rmat ion
Calls are made to confirm your scheduled pick up time the business day prior to your scheduled trip. If  a message is left, please call and confirm your pickup time at 303.464.5534. If there is no answer, press 1 and leave a message. If we do not receive a confirmation call, your ride will be cancelled.

Help Older Adults Remain Independent
Seniors' Resource Center invites you to make a difference in the Broomfield community by providing rides for older adults. Great volunteer opportunity for retirees, stay at home parents, and those with flexible schedules. Rides to medical appointments, the grocery store, and other critical needs are provided Monday-Friday from
8 a.m.-4 p.m. Even an hour or two of your time will make a huge difference to an older adult. The gesture speaks volumes and new friendships will be made. If you would like to volunteer or know someone who would, please email Pat Pierson at PPierson@SRCaging.org or call 303.332.3840.

Broomfield FlexRide: Your Neighborhood Connection
FlexRide is a curb-to-curb transit service available to all ages and abilities. The RTD FlexRide is an affordable option to get around the Broomfield service area and access the US 36 Bus Rapid Transit Flatiron Flyer service to Denver and Boulder, as well as the  Interlocken FlexRide and other local transit connections.

Book online with quick mobile confirmation or call and leave a message with details of your trip request 303.434.8989.

Local Coordinating Council (LCC)
Each LCC is an alliance of community organizations, individuals, local government, and other interested groups that works together to identify and fulfill the public and human service transportation needs of their counties. Key target populations include older adults, people with disabilities, and low-income populations.  For more information on Broomfield LCC, click here.

Veteran's Medical Mobility program connects members of the community with senior veterans who face the challenge of obtaining reliable transportation to and from VA facilities  and
VA-related appointments. With a generous heart and friendly  smile, our volunteers pick up senior vets and escort them to and from their home and their medical appointments. Sign up here to receive rides or to volunteer to provide rides!

November is National Family Caregivers Month

The annual observance is a time to honor family caregivers across the country. This year's theme is "Caregiving Around the Clock," recognizing the challenges that family caregivers face and how they manage them day and night. Are you providing care for someone 60+ in Broomfield County? Please contact Senior Services at 303.464.5529 or email lclaxton@broomfield.org to find out how the Caregiver Respite Program may be able to assist you with no cost, temporary, in-home services. Qualifications are based on need. This valuable program provides respite care for family members and/or regular caregivers while supporting seniors the opportunity to age in place. Funding is made possible thanks to a local grant, and voluntary, confidential contributions from individuals.

Furthermore, we'd like to highlight our Parkinson's Support Groups in honor of National Family Caregivers Month. We have two: Parkinson's and Parkinson's Care Partners, that meet at the BCC on a monthly basis. Both are led by a seasoned facilitator, Kathie Schumacher, along with her counterpart Jill Johnson. As a participant in this group, you can expect to hear and see a wide variety of presentations and guest speakers that will provide useful tools and important information. The Broomfield Senior Services Team strongly recommends that anyone who has been affected by Parkinson's in some way, attend one of these helpful groups.

Fresh, hot, nutritious meals are delivered to your home by volunteers Monday through Friday, between 11 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. Frozen meals are available for delivery on Friday if you need meals for the weekends as well. If you are interested or need more information, please call 303.464.5532.

If you or someone you know is having trouble caring for themselves or is caring for an older family member, please call our office for assistance at 303.464.5529. We can help identify needs for service, resources and the  decision making  process.

Support Groups bring together people who are going through or have gone through similar experiences. Broomfield Senior Services offers a variety of support groups to provide you an opportunity to connect and gain support from others. Groups include Dementia Caregiver, Parkinson's Disease, Multiple Sclerosis, Diabetes, Grief and more. For a full list of Support Groups with meeting times, stop by our front desk or visit our website .

The Senior Volunteer Handyman Program provides services to enhance the quality of life for seniors 60+ residing in Broomfield County. The goal of the program is to help seniors live safely and independently. Services include minor home repairs and maintenance and are provided by skilled volunteers. Please call 303.464.5529 or email for more information.
