ONLINE COURSES AND LECTURES
Using well-known historic places as case studies, this two-part class, hosted by architectural historian Calder Loth, offers an exploration of varying mindsets toward the relationship between traditional architecture and landscape. Before-and-after views illustrate how numerous historic gardens and landscapes have received critical evaluation and treatment. The class stresses the importance of control in creating and maintaining appropriate historic effects. Many of the approaches discussed can apply to contemporary projects.

To even the casual observer, Jean-Jacques Lequeu's body of work evinces an otherworldly element. He has often been placed in a lineage of "visionary architects," although his legacy is potentially more complex, and possibly even richer. Barry Bergdoll, Meyer Schapiro Professor of Art History in the Department of Art History and Archaeology at Columbia University and curator in the Department of Architecture and Design at the Museum of Modern Art, has offered a lecture that explores the life, work, and legacy of Lequeu.

This lecture is also presented as part of  The Françoise and Andrew Skurman Lecture Series on Classical French Architecture .

In this fall 2019 lecture the ICAA hosted John Phibbs, noted author and principal of Debois Landscape Survey Group, for an exploration of the accomplishments of English landscapers Lancelot "Capability" Brown and Humphry Repton, and in particular their solutions to what has been termed "the front door problem."

John has been advising on historic landscapes since 1978. He has worked on a broad range of parks and gardens (over 600 sites), the greatest concentration being in the south of England, where the storms of 1987 and 1991 had their biggest impact. His work has covered a wide range of dates and styles, but he is an acknowledged authority on Georgian landscapes, especially those by Lancelot ‘Capability’ Brown and Humphry Repton. John has done his time on the National Trust’s Gardens Panel, which guides overall policy on gardens in the Trust’s ownership, and he serves on the Design Review Panel of the Georgian Group, which has a statutory role concerned with the conservation of Georgian buildings and landscapes. In 2018, he was awarded an MBE by the Queen for his services to Landscape Architecture and his work on Capability Brown.

What is our cultural landscape? Why is it so important to protect the vision of historic public and private spaces? Throughout her career, Janice Parker has had the honor of working on gardens by Ellen Biddle Shipman, Annette Hoyt Flanders, and Rose Standish Nichols. She takes true inspiration from the long line of creative, hardworking American female landscape architects that preceded her.

Please join the Institute of Classical Architecture & Art (ICAA) for a virtual lecture on Tuesday, July 28th, as Janice explores the importance of preserving our public and private cultural heritage, and walks through the process of restoring two historic landscapes.

Janice Parker , Principal at Janice Parker Landscape Architects , has conceptualized and directed innovative landscape architecture for national private and public clients across the United States. Her firm’s work has been featured in Architectural Digest , The New York Times , Veranda , The Wall Street Journal , Luxe Interiors + Design , The Washington Post Online , and Vogue , to name a few. In 2017 Images Publishing released Designing A Vision , authored by Janice and showcasing the firm’s work. Under her guidance, Janice Parker Landscape Architects has been honored with multiple awards, including the 2019, 2018, and 2016 Stanford White Award for Landscape Design, the 2020, 2019, and 2015 Professional Merit Award from the CTASLA, and the 2017 New England Design Hall of Fame Award.

Please join the Institute of Classical Architecture & Art (ICAA) for a virtual lecture on Wednesday, October 15th with Arne Maynard.

Arne Maynard is known for his love of plants and uses them to create year-round structure in his garden designs. Pleached fruit creates a wonderful boundary feature, topiary adds drama and geometry and sculpted earthworks provide texture and layers that can be clipped or left to meadow, depending on the season. In this online lecture, delivered live by Arne from Allt y bela, his home in Wales, UK, he will explain how he creates planted structure, talking us through some of his signature plants and explaining how he uses them in his designs. Using photographs and short films from his own garden and some private gardens he has designed that are rarely seen by the public, this lecture will give viewers a personal insight into Arne’s love of plants.

NOTE: This event is free and open to ICAA Members exclusively. Advance registration is required to receive the link to the webinar platform.

1.5 credits towards the Certificate in Classical Architecture

In this session of the Case Studies series, Andrew Cogar, Ryan Yurcaba, and Clay Rokicki of Historical Concepts lead an in-depth discussion on the rebuilding of the small town of Senoia, Georgia through architectural and planning projects that leverage public and private funding, benefiting the greater good. They will talk about how incremental projects can lead to the revival of commercial activity on Main Street, and how that can lead to a new chapter for the town with mixed-use office space and residential units. The presenters will share regional design influences and how details and materials were incorporated into new structures to intentionally continue the heritage of Senoia’s built environment.

Although it may be unexpected that a classically-inspired architecture firm could also be an early adopter of technology, Peter Pennoyer Architects believes that classicists are well-positioned to lead the architecture field into the future. While hand-drawing is still a cornerstone of their work, Peter Pennoyer Architects is passionate about using digital tools to advance their work. One of the first residential firms to get a 3D printer in-house and to hire a dedicated 3D Print Technician nearly 10 years ago, they have continually invested in the latest technology, including Virtual Reality, BIM, and 3D Printing.

Join firm founder Peter Pennoyer, BIM Director Colin Slaten, and 3D Production Manager Philip Davis for an in-depth exploration, and visual demonstrations, of the ways they are employing these digital advances in their work and for their clients.

Please join the Southern California Chapter for an illustrated view into the great summer resort homes that made the Hamptons, often referred to as the “American Riviera,” one of the premier resorts of glamour, luxury, and architectural achievement during the era from 1880-1930. Created to serve as summer retreats from the hot northeast cities to provide a healthy environment of fresh air and seaside cooling breezes, the architectural styles offered a rich diversity in design from the shingle style, Italian, Spanish & Mediterranean villas, Colonial Revival, Georgian, Tudor, English Cotswold cottages and the early beginnings of Art Deco and the International style.

Ancient Rome is much in the news. Not for any sensational archaeological discovery, or novel historical insight, but in its very old, familiar role as metaphor, as cautionary tale. A question increasingly asked – Are we Rome? - was previously posed by 17th, 18th and 19th century French and English visitors to the city, their respective empires at one summit or another. What did they make of shattered Rome? Of the not quite quiescent remains? Can we understand something of the city’s meanings for them through their preferences with architectural knick-knacks?

Let’s find out. Join the ICAA and Lucia Howard for a free webinar on this very timely subject.
