Acceleration East High School
Community Brief
Wednesday, October 30, 2019

Lunches are loud, class changes have lots of movement, and the days can be a blur. But, classroom instruction at Acceleration East is peaking. Last week I had the opportunity to review some of our data from the first nine weeks and see how we stack up against the other high schools.

Yes, I'm competitive. But here is why . . . our folks work hard - students, teachers, staff and parents. We strive to keep our kids focused on what matters - grades, clubs, and community service to help others.

Hard work and effort matters! We are now two weeks into the second marking period. You know it matters because the semester break at year's end will be here soon!

Buckle up, stay focused and make this your best quarter yet!

Student Health and Fitness
HOPE Class with Ms. Trimble
(Health Opportunities through Physical Exercise)

Ms. Trimble's class exercising through circuit training. Each exercise station lasted 30 seconds and then the students would move onto the next station. The pattern was counterclockwise throughout the lesson on this Wednesday, October 23rd.

Chemistry Science with Mrs. Dipasquale

Students have been learning about atomic mass and measurement through their analysis of the fictitious element "candium."

In this activity Mrs. Dipasquale's students had to work cooperatively with other students, collect data, and analyze data. In order for students to complete this activity, they needed to have a clear understanding of the concept of average atomic mass; average atomic mass is not simply the mathematical average of the masses of each isotope, but instead depends upon the amount of isotope present. (Samples of student work from this October 23rd lesson further below.)

FAFSA Night at Acceleration East High School
(Free Application for Federal Student Aid)

Acceleration East families working on the college financial aid process during our FAFSA Night last Thursday evening.

Ms. Roca organized this special event on October 24th to assist our college bound students and their families. Thank you!!!

Community footnote: These numbers are the latest available from the Office of Federal Student Aid (part of the U.S. Department of Education) as of Wednesday, October 30th. Since our FAFSA Night was October 24th, our counts will jump in their next report.

And yet another reason why it is so important to get the college financial aid application process done correctly and sooner vs. later!

This Week's Motivational Moment!
JOHN WOODEN'S PYRAMID OF SUCCESS

John Wooden was a college basketball hall of famer and national champion as both a player at Purdue University and a coach at UCLA, the latter of which he led to ten national titles in a twelve-year stretch, including seven in a row and at one point an 88-game winning streak. In short, the best to ever do it!

Wooden's Pyramid of Success (larger view) consists of fifteen blocks of traits that individuals and teams should have in order to reach maximum potential. Naturally, they build on one another from basic human traits that anyone can possess to climb toward the top block of "Competitive Greatness."

You can see the Pyramid in the image above, but here's a breakdown, albeit in "reverse":
  • FOUNDATION: Industriousness, Friendship, Loyalty, Cooperation, Enthusiasm
  • SECOND LAYER: Self-Control, Alertness, Initiative, Intentness
  • MIDDLE: Condition, Skill, Team Spirit
  • FOURTH LAYER: Poise, Confidence
  • PINNACLE: Competitive Greatness
Additionally, the Pyramid provides triangles running up either side for further reinforcement. Those sections are:
  • LEFT SIDE: Ambition, Adaptability, Resourcefulness, Fight, Faith
  • RIGHT SIDE: Sincerity, Honesty, Reliability, Integrity, Patience
Quite the handful of traits, right? Most images of the Pyramid of Success, like the one above, offer descriptions of how Wooden viewed each trait and how it fits in with the rest of the group.

Now answer this question about yourself: What is your signature trait, the #1 that you can lean on in most situations? Is it on the Pyramid, and if so, where? How many of the other traits within the Pyramid do you possess but are maybe not quite as prominent as your signature? If you were to color in those blocks, is it mostly full - and perhaps more importantly, what is missing?

Give it some thought Phoenix students and staff!

WOODEN ON CHARACTER:
"Be more concerned with your character than your reputation, because your character is what you really are, while your reputation is merely what others think you are."
