Graduate Student Spotlight
|
|
This month, in advance of graduation, we present a spotlight on two Pace PhD students who will be graduating this year.
|
|
Chava Pollack, College of Health Professions
This year’s graduation is Chava’s third at Pace University and follows her graduation from the undergraduate nursing program in 2014 and the Family Nurse Practitioner program in 2016. Chava’s worked in a cardiac step-down unit, in an emergency room and has been an advanced practice provider focusing on care transitions. Her work has highlighted inequities in care access as well as the lack of resources available for frail older adults living in the community, and their caregivers.
Under the guidance of her mentor, Sharon Wexler, PhD Chava has worked on various research projects revolving around care for older adults. She presented her work nationally and most recently internationally at the International Conference of Frailty and Sarcopenia Research in Toulouse, France. In partnership with Dr. Wexler, she recently published a scoping review on technology use for frail, community dwelling older adults in the Journal of the American Nurses Association of New York.

Chava’s dissertation investigates the impact of a robotic pet on physical and social frailty on community dwelling older adults. She received an internal grant from Pace University to fund the study. Chava recruited patients from inpatient units at a community hospital and followed them after discharge. This project was especially timely during this past year as older adults have been increasingly isolated due to pandemic control measures. In the future, Chava hopes to continue her work caring for and improving the lives of older adults.

Xiaodong Xu, Computer Science
Xiaodong came to Pace with her passion of computer science from China four years ago. She began her work with Juan Shan, PhD and later joined the robotics lab, headed by Paul Benjamin, PhD. While in the lab she took a doctoral course on artificial intelligence and, after completing her master’s degree, continued on to the doctoral program.
Xiaodon’g dissertation research focuses on computer vision, or what she calls “computer eyes.” In her study Implementing and Accelerating Match-Mediated Difference Algorithm by GPU, she introduces an algorithm that computes the differences between the real world and the virtual world. She also built her own robot and is currently focusing on multi-objects detection and tracking to make it work in the real world model. As a future career goal, she hopes to become a professor so she can both work with students and continue doing research.

He collaborated with researchers at University College Dublin and they co-authored a paper entitled A comparative study of support vector machine and neural networks for file type identification using n-gram analysis. This conference paper was then selected for publication in the prestigious Forensic Science International: Digital Investigation, an academic journal published by Elsevir.

Lissa Griffin, Professor of Law (Elisabeth Haub School of Law) has been granted a Fulbright Scholar Award for teaching and research in Spain for January 2022. Professor Griffin will be teaching at the University of Malaga Faculty of Laws. Her research will continue to analyze the evolving roles of domestic supreme courts, which, faced worldwide with inactive executive or legislative branches, are pushing against traditional separation of powers boundaries. She will also take part in organizing and hosting a conference on “International Criminal Judicial Cooperation,” to take place at the University in 2022.
