2020 Arroyo Published
The WRRC is pleased to announce the release of the 2020 Arroyo, Community-based Solutions to Local Water Challenges in Arizona. Drawing on presentations made at the WRRC 2019 annual conference by knowledgeable members of communities across Arizona, the Arroyo contains stories about local resourcefulness, innovation, and cooperation on a range of water issues. Compilation of these experiences provides a trove of ideas for others to learn from. A selection of additional resources available to help localities achieve their water management goals is also presented.

wrap-upThe "Get Ready" Webinars Wrap-Up
with CAP Panel

With our 2020 Annual Conference,  Water at the Crossroads: The Next 40 Years , less than one month away, the WRRC held the final installment of our "Get Ready" webinar series on Tuesday, March 3. In presentations perfectly suited to usher in our 2020 Conference, a panel of CAP staff discussed a wide range of topics relating to Colorado River water and CAP's long-range planning. The panel included Patrick Dent, Director of Water Policy, Planning Analysts Austin Carey and Orestes Morfin, Senior Policy Analysts Angie Lohse and Mohammed Mahmoud, and Senior Water Resources Analyst, Chris Brooks. Panelists provided an overview of CAP's operations over the past decades and its modeling efforts for future planning. Each of the six presentations provided in-depth information on topics such as supply and demand modeling, recovery of banked water, Colorado River modeling, CAGRD planning, and the CAP Climate Adaptation Plan. Presentations were followed by  audience questions. Continue these discussions and more at our conference on Friday, March 27, at the Black Canyon Conference Center in Phoenix, AZ.

grad-assistantWRRC Graduate Assistant and Coverdell Fellow Participates in Showcase

WRRC Graduate Assistant and Coverdell Fellow, Paul La Farga, exhibited a research poster last week at the annual Peace Corps Coverdell Fellows Outreach and Research Showcase in honor of 58 years of Peace Corps service. Coverdell Fellows are returned volunteers in the Graduate College who are charged with providing benefit to an underserved community. Along with his work at the WRRC, Mr. La Farga is a graduate student in the College of Architecture, Planning, and Landscape Architecture, who served as a Community Economic Development Promoter in the South American Republic of Paraguay 2017-2019. Mr. La Farga presented preliminary research from a Bureau of Reclamation study led by WRRC Research Analyst, Ashley Hullinger, and supported by Program Coordinator, Michael Seronde. Over the next year and a half, the WRRC team will assess the long-term impacts of ecosystem services on community health in southern Gila County, in collaboration with the Cobre Valley Watershed Partnership.

anchorWater is Magic!

Water sticks to itself and other things was the conclusion that over 250 people came to at the Chandler Innovation Fair! From the shocking number of water drops they could fit on a penny to the number of paper clips they could float on a water surface, people learned about the properties of cohesion, adhesion and surface tension. Hamilton High School hosted the Fair February 21st and about 4,000 parents and students from around the area attended. Thanks to Arizona Project WET's (APW) Americorps team we are able to deliver interactive learning opportunities like this at community events.

Event participation continues a long-term partnership with the City of Chandler. APW program coordinators were out in the Chandler community delivering 15 Water Scene Investigations and 2 water festivals this year alone. Community partnerships like this benefit everyone.

green-vPresentation in Green Valley Answers Local Water Questions

On Tuesday, February 25, WRRC Associate Director Claire Zucker and Assistant Director Susanna Eden presented "Know About Your Water - Green Valley/Sahuarita" to an audience of more than 130 interested citizens at the Desert Hills Social Center in Green Valley. The program was hosted by the Environment Committee of the Green Valley Council, a membership organization of HOAs/POAs, businesses, and public service agencies that serves the area's unincorporated communities. The presentation focused on what local residents want to know about their water and included an interactive element that allowed the audience to give real-time feedback on water-related questions. The product of a two-year research project, the final version of "Know About Your Water - Green Valley/Sahuarita" will be posted on the WRRC website.
