With the start of the fall term and the Scholar Strike, it has been a challenging week and I would like to take this opportunity to check in with you. Please rest assured that I am here to listen to any questions or concerns you may have and that my top priority is to ensure that you have the support and resources you need to be successful as we continue to adjust to remote work. We have included links to remote teaching and wellness resources below, which I hope will prove useful to you in the coming weeks.

I have been encouraged by the numerous stories I have heard from members of our Faculty who participated in the Strike, from those who signed the statement on the Scholar Strike Canada website to those who issued independent statements, suspended classes and other events, shared resources and incorporated dialogue on anti-racism into classes and academic activities, or reflected on racism, oppression, and transformative justice to become better informed about the impact on Black, Indigenous, and People of Colour (BIPOC) communities.

The work and learning that the Strike inspired and amplified continues. We remain focused on and committed to advancing our guiding principle of equity, diversity, inclusivity, and Indigeneity (EDII) and the strategic initiatives that support it, and we will share updates on our work with you in the coming weeks.

Once again, I would like to thank you for your continued flexibility and dedication as we make changes and confront the continued challenges caused by the COVID-19 pandemic together. I hope that you will join me at the upcoming Lunch and Conversation event mentioned in the e-news below, which will be an opportunity for us to continue our conversation and remain in communication this term. Please also do not hesitate to contact me by email regarding any questions or concerns you may have.

Please stay healthy and safe.

Sincerely,

Barbara Crow, PhD
Dean, Faculty of Arts and Science

Exam Accommodation System Deadline - September 30

The EAS Portal is now ready to receive data for all scheduled quizzes, tests and midterms for the Fall 2020 term.

The Exams Office will not be administering any midterm accommodations in Fall 2020, but will be providing student accommodation information for assessments submitted by the deadline.

If you are having any midterm assessments in your course where you would reasonably need to provide accommodations (e.g., extra time, etc), please log it as a mid-term assessment in the Exam Accommodation System by September 30 and no later than 2 weeks in advance of the assessment.

Accommodation information will be emailed to the instructor in a password-protected file the week prior to the scheduled assessment.

Review the user guide for our EAS Instructor Portal for more information.

The Academic Consideration Team is pleased to introduce our new team; Lucy Mackrell (Manager), Sarah Bunting and Melissa Marcucci Grant (Coordinators). They would be happy to answer any questions or concerns you may have throughout the year.

Please find this year's FAS Instructor Guide for Academic Consideration here. In preparation for remote delivery, we have made a few updates to expand our definition and streamline process. In particular, we've added unforeseen technological and workspace disruptions to our operating definition. Please see the Summary of Changes for 2020-21 (full definitions can be found in the Guide and online).

Should you have further questions, please feel free to follow up with our team at [email protected].

We have heard from a few faculty members that their students in China are having difficulty accessing onQ videos and some other platforms like YouTube.

ITS has set up Virtual Private Network (VPN) service to China. They have 'whitelisted' several 3rd party platforms so that students can access publishers' material as well as YouTube and other channels.

In order to access Queen's VPNs, students need to get signed up individually through ITS following the instructions below and found on the ITS website.
Due to the configuration of the VPN, only active students who currently reside in China will benefit from the use of this service.

Accessing the VPNs to China

The Global Accelerator Network Service is described here.

Students can request the service directly by submitting a request form as linked in the Getting Started section of the Global Accelerator Network Service Page.

Once registered, the students will receive an email with personalized information to setup the FortiClient VPN Client.  The email will provide the same setup information as found on the Service Page, along with the student's unique username and initial password for the VPN service.

Help is available by contacting the IT Support Centre.

The MFA enrolment rate for the first 3 waves was 63% successful.  Based on the feedback received, the following changes were made:
  • Increased clarity on MFA options for those who do not have a mobile device or are unsure about using their personal device for MFA.
  • A link to request hardware tokens is now included in enrolment communications.
