Chatting With The Commodore

I hope everyone had a safe, relaxing and wet Labor Day weekend! Luckily, the majority of us are in Sunny California and can still wear white! How lucky we are to be able to get out on the water nearly the entire year! It's sad to think so many of our sailing partners across the country will start 'winterizing' their vessels in just a few short weeks. In fact, WSA-OC still has so many more on-the-water events to take us nearly through the end of the year!
By now, I hope you have our last Dockside Clinic on your calendar for September 14th. Our Raft Up at Island White on September 21st, and our last Social Sail of the year in November! Oh, so you say you'd like more to do in October?? If you HURRY, you can still get a Cal 20 race team together in time for LEMWOD! Or just come out and cheer on your fellow racers as they compete in this year's event - October 12th and 13th.
Still want more to do??? Okay then, be sure to get on our WSA-OC Facebook Page and post that you're either 'looking' for crew or 'available' to crew! Our group is nothing, if not SOCIAL!
This is the time of year we start doing a serious search for volunteers! If you've had fun, made new friends and want more from WSA-OC, we ask you to GET INVOLVED! There is so much that goes on behind the scenes and it takes a village to make it all come together. Wherever your passion may lie, we have a job for you!
We need help with On-The-Water events, Philanthropy and Community Service events, Communication (Social Media, Newsletter and more), Ship Store, Hospitality, Board of Director positions, Secretary, Treasurer .... you name it, we need you! Call me directly or reach out to any of the Board of Directors!
I'll see you all on September 10th at the Newport Beach Yacht Club for our next General Meeting!
See you on the water,
- Karen

Catalina Weekend Rendezvous Was A Big Hit!
|
In case you were wondering what the trip was all about, here's what you missed. Commodores Welcome, Hike to Sea Glass Beach, BYOBlow-up, Progressive Appetizers, Dancing, more Hiking, Laughter, Fun, New Friendships and Sailing!
Thank you to
Tracey Brown of WSA/Long Beach Women's Sailing Assn for her advice and guidance regarding this awesome event!
One of the favorites of the entire weekend was the progressive appetizer/beverage tour, including True Blue (Long Beach) teaching us a Scottish song, sharing a little scotch whiskey and providing us with some excellent appetizers! True Blue received an honorable mention with 20 total points. Decorations were over the top on Sognatorre's Fiesta-themed boat and came in 2nd with a total of 21 points. Sails Lady won both "best beverage" (blue lagoon's complete with fish), and "best costumes" including a lobster, queen crab, octopussy, dolphin and woman-'o-war and came in 1st with a total of 23 points!
We also had a poker run, wherein each boat collected cards by attending Friday and Saturday events. This proved to be more difficult than initially thought, as many were to "happy" to recall what happened to their cards and/or could not read the numbers on them. Let the record show, there was no four-of-a-kind with 9's hand, as I had the last 9 in my hand. The winner with 2 pair (4's/K's - Ace high) was Indra! Congratulations to all our winners!
Waiting a year for the next one is far too long. So.....
I am currently looking for boats for our next event (Raft Up) on September 21
st
at Island White, which is one of the oil islands off of Long Beach. Help me make this event just as successful by donating the use of your vessel. Skippers/Captains will be able to hand select their First Mate!
Sign ups will begin in a few weeks so stay tuned! Just a plug, but if you'd also like to donate your vessel for our last OTW event of the year on November 2
nd
(Brunch on Board), I'll be happy to take your information for that as well!
