Your Community Brief from Oak Ridge High School
Friday, February 28, 2020

It seems like just yesterday that we opened up the 2020 New Year, but this afternoon we will close out another month. We now only have nine school days remaining in the third quarter of 2019-2020 with the week of March 9 being only a four-day week for students (Friday, March 13 is a student holiday).

We do have several special events on the schedule prior to spring break. One of these is tomorrow's Saturday math tutoring from 8:00AM to 12:00PM (details below). It won't be long after students return from spring break later next month that our annual "testing season" will be here so I really encourage any student needing extra help in algebra or geometry to participate. Of course, our after school tutoring program has been up and running for sometime now and also provides a great opportunity for students needing additional support.

Please remember that our month SAC meeting is scheduled for next Tuesday, March 3 at 6:00PM. That Tuesday evening will also include time for our 3DE/JA Academy Parent meeting. All members of our school community are invited and encouraged to attend!

I think you will enjoy this latest edition as we have several great Pioneer success stories to share. Enjoy your weekend!

Our NHS teamed up with Shingle Creek Elementary to participate and volunteer in the Team Crum Pancreatic Cancer Run at UCF.  Each year, in communities across the country, tens of thousands of people participate in the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network's PurpleStride events. These events are critical in raising awareness and funds that advance pancreatic cancer research and support patients and loved ones with a promise of a better tomorrow. This was an amazing opportunity and a great time was had by all!

Pioneer Performing Arts

Performing Arts Department has been busy! The orchestra and dance department proudly represented Oak Ridge High School at the Zora Festival Friday, January 31st. Many positive comments were made and it's a wonderful opportunity to showcase our students out in the community.

That same afternoon our chorus department hosted District Solo and Ensemble festival. They did a fantastic job performing as well as working as host and learning the behind the scenes work that goes into such a large event.

On stage at the Zora Festival (Jan. 31, 2020)

Our performing arts students had the extraordinary opportunity to attend the production of Aladdin at the Dr. Phillip's Center for the Performing Arts. It was an amazing opportunity and wonderful experience. Our students were treated as VIP's and all expenses were covered by an anonymous alumna of Oak Ridge High School!

College and Career Center

It was a packed house at our HBCU College Panel! A huge thank you to our Pioneer teachers and counselors who shared their experiences. This was a very informative introduction to our HBCU College Fair where there was a lot of great information and on-site admissions!

Congratulations to the 22 students who gained acceptance - we are very proud of you!

NEMP Update
No Excuses Mentoring Program in Tallahassee

The NEMP 2020 college tour to FSU and FAMU was a huge success! In order to attend this college tour, each member had to earn at least a 3.0 GPA, while also maintaining stellar class attendance, no behavior referrals and attending all mandated community service projects!

This tour provided an opportunity for our members to be exposed to new experiences!

Multicultural Festival Highlights

Many joined us for a fun-filled multicultural fair to celebrate the social, cultural and spiritual benefits of cultural diversity.  Oak Ridge High School provided parents and students the experience of international flavors of food, music, dance, art and learning experiences.  Participants were dressed in cultural attire and sample cultural cuisine was provided as traditions around the globe were presented. It was a fun filled event - a wonderful time was had by all that attended!

Pioneers Serving the Community!
Adopt A Block Mobile Food Drop

Oak Ridge High School partnered with The Orlando Dream Center to provide a 2nd Food Giveaway to the surrounding communities. Second Harvest Food Bank delivered 10,000 pounds (13 pallets) of fruit, vegetables, and dry goods to Oak Ridge High School Gymnasium for a FREE community wide event.  Families were lined up by 7:30am with their shopping carts, boxes and bags as volunteers made sure each family received what they needed.
