Sailing Science Center News
September 2019
Vol. 3, No. 1

Welcome to the September issue of the Sailing Science Center News! Our theme this month is growth, as we appreciate how far we've come as an organization and look forward to how far we will go.
Looking into the horizon has long been a way to stay free of seasickness when on a boat. This can help one remain stable while focusing on a vision ahead. We at the SSC also strive to continue looking to the horizon
–
fostering new ideas and valuable partnerships, as we focus on our vision ahead.

One can choose to go back toward safety or forward toward growth. Growth must be chosen again and again; fear must be overcome again and again.

Board Member Spotlight - Ron Young
In July we voted three new members onto our Board of Directors. Among them was Ron Young, whom we also elected to the position of Chairman of the Board. This month we’d like to take a few paragraphs to share about Ron’s background as we welcome him publicly to the SSC.
Ron is a native San Franciscan, born at St. Francis Hospital during the post-war era. He was the first sailor in his family, but has now done enough sailing for ten families, with over 3,000 races logged on four continents. He has a younger half-sister who lives in Denver, and four children of his own – three girls and a boy – all of whom are sailors. Ron also boasts being one quarter Cherokee, possibly contributing to his high level of septuagenarian health and energy… or it could just be all that time spent on boats that’s keeping him young.
Ron started sailing on a 30’ ketch-rigged whaleboat named
Ranger, at age 13, after navigating to the local Sea Scouts chapter. Even though the minimum age to join was 14, he wormed his way in and soon rose to the top ranks. He was hooked from day-one. Any conversation with Ron about his early sailing days will lead to endless stories of adventures, including being shot at with live bullets by the guards on Alcatraz when he and his friend sailed too close to the island! In his professional sailing career Ron has been involved in six America’s Cup campaigns, going back to 1985 when he raised $8.7M in 19 months for the Golden Gate Challenge, San Francisco’s first entry into the America’s Cup.
In the 1960s if you sailed too close to Alcatraz the guards would shoot at you with real bullets. If you don't believe it, just ask Ron Young!
Ron’s business resume is longer than the mast on a 12-meter yacht, reflecting experience as a senior executive or board member at world-class companies like Levi’s, CVS, Electronic Arts, Nokia and others, and including a role on the board of West Marine in the 1990s, during the time when they became a public company. Ron is currently the Chairman of the Wednesday Yachting Luncheon lecture series at the St. Francis Yacht Club, a position he has held for more than 20 years, and is the founder and CEO of
Shocase, a social network for marketing professionals.
We are delighted to have Ron be part of the SSC and look forward to having his experience and leadership as we tackle the many challenges ahead of us. Welcome aboard mate!

August Volunteer Event - San Francisco Model Yacht Club
Our August Volunteer Event was an exclusive tour of the
San Francisco Model Yacht Club.
SSC volunteers and Board members had the chance to tour the SFMYC Clubhouse, learn about the model yacht building process, sail R/C model yachts on Spreckels Lake, and watch Race 4 of the Santa Barbara Class. Thank you to everyone who attended and to SFMYC for hosting us!
We hold monthly events to say Thank You to the active volunteers who are helping the Sailing Science Center grow. If you'd like to get in on the action click on the link below to sign up and get involved.

Fall Crew List Party - Only 8 Days Away!
Every year local sailing magazine,
Latitude 38
, holds crew parties in the spring and fall. They're great places to meet fellow sailors and we highly recommend them. In the spring the parties are focused on getting ready for the upcoming racing season and in the fall they are focused on cruisers heading to Mexico.
This fall the party is on
September 11
and will be held at the
Bay Model
. If you haven't seen the Bay Model before that would be enough reason to go by itself, but the SSC will also be there so you can come talk to us, get free stuff and learn about things we're doing that aren't published in the newsletter.

Danny Beesley at the College of Alameda FabLab
In early August we were introduced to Danny Beesley of
Idea Builder Labs. Danny has built a business based on helping organizations create FabLabs. A FabLab, or Fabrication Laboratory, is a small-scale workshop with digital fabrication facilities. This means 3D printers, numerically controlled routers and other snazzy stuff. One such installation is at the
College of Alameda (COA), where we met Danny for a tour. This mini workshop came with just about everything you would need to start making museum exhibits - including young, creative students.
Our ambitions for SSC are so high that we are going to need multiple exhibit-building sites, and COA is shaping up to be one of those sites. We were super-excited to see what Danny has created and can't wait to start building exhibits together. Thank you to Danny and to
Martha Blanchfield at
Renegade Sailing who made the introduction.

In August Christine Cid (she goes by Cid) joined us to help with managing the editorial content in our newsletter. Cid was a former Content Manager for the American Marketing Association's newsletter, so she's already a whiz at this stuff.
We appreciate your help Cid. Thank you for what you're doing!

Leadership Corner - Growth
Last month we looked at abundance and having an abundance mindset vs. a scarcity mindset. This month we explore growth, and the powerful mindset behind it.
As children our physical growth and development comes naturally with age. Our intellectual, social and spiritual growth develop with age too, but to reach our potential in these areas requires cultivation and effort.
