There Must Be Another Way

Peter may be the "rock" on which Christ will build the church (Matt. 16:18), but when Jesus reveals the suffering that will come first, Peter becomes a tempter and "stumbling block." Assuming God must have a different way to save the world, Peter protests Jesus' suffering and death. Jesus explains to Peter and all his disciples that, in fact, this is the way to life-losing one's life in order to find it.

By tempting Jesus to an easier way than his journey through suffering to resurrection, Peter personifies a temptation common to all generations of Jesus' disciples: seeking a way to avoid "losing oneself," instead of surrendering all to and with the one we follow. Rather than losing our lives-our selves, possessions, and time-we hold on more tightly, afraid of what will happen to our comfort, success, and identity if we let go. Those things we hold onto then become, like Peter, stumbling blocks along the way of self-giving love.

But while "saving one's life" sounds sensible, those things also stand in the way of the new life into which Jesus beckons us to follow him. Perhaps Peter's problem is that he sees only the suffering and death, without grasping the new life that comes through it. In times when we too are tempted by worldly ways of comfort and success, convinced that surely God must have an easier way than the way of self-giving love, this gospel reminds us that resurrection and life await on the other side of suffering and death. [Sundays and Seasons, 2020]

Our God in the flesh empties himself, gone is any power or dignity, and his life is given for the sake of the world. Some questions to ponder this week:
  • Knowing that resurrection is coming, how do you choose to live in love?
  • When you encounter evil, how do you resist resorting to its tactics but seek to overcome it with good?
  • While we cannot control the actions and attitudes of others, how can we seek to live at peace with all people?
Grace and peace,
Bill+

From The Music Corner

Holly and Ralph

As I return from a 3-month Sabbatical, both Ralph and I find it hard to truly express the gratitude we have to our Lord, and to our All Saints community for this unique time of renewal and restoration which will shape our lives for a long time to come.   This time of rest impacted us deeply, and I will share a few ways as best I can.
Our focus became activities that daily nurtured us -- we early on decided that too much "device" activity did not add to the nurturing we desired.  So, although we kept abreast of current events, we avoided much TV, computers, social media and any other onslaught of information which led to inner angst or chaos.  This in itself aided in the goal of refreshing our souls.
We DID choose to do much of the following:  awaking with the sun (with no alarms!),  sitting on our porch for long morning times, reading, praying, processing deep conversations, journaling (Holly).  A picture of a book that impacted us both is included in a photo below.   We are realizing anew why our God commanded that we observe Sabbath rest one day a week.... a practice I have let lapse, and have now renewed in my life.  We highly recommend exploring this book and others around Sabbath-keeping.  I enjoyed lots of other sacred and secular reading, and focused on an 8 book murder mystery series by Julia Spencer-Fleming (recommended to me by Claudia Bissett - TYOU!).
We walked, biked, hiked, kayaked, swam, enjoyed flower gardening and planting an apple tree....   and treasured the beauty of our summer NH days....  even getting to the Maine coastline for some days to breathe in that ocean air and savor God's coastal beauty.  We planned, prepped and enjoyed delicious food, and also enjoyed some feasts from restaurants that were serving.
I enjoyed playing piano and singing just to worship our Lord (not planning services :0), and bless Him and ourselves in this home.  One delightful focus was learning some lovely Debussy pieces, which you may hear recorded soon.
We also chose to enjoy numerous small gatherings with immediate family, which blessed us very deeply in this pandemic season.  Other friends that desired outside visits also found their way to our driveway.
We are rested, refreshed and ready to re-enter the new challenges that face us as a worshipping community in these times.  The last weeks of August have held desired and needed Zoom mtgs, planning, preparing and practicing for going forward at All Saints this fall.
In closing, we can only pray that YOU, our dear church family, are finding your own special ways to be encouraged, to choose courage, to hold on to the faithful hand of our Christ, and let His loving guidance strengthen and focus you no matter what is swirling in our world.  You all have given us some needed tools to keep balanced in our own journey..... and we bless you and thank you from the depths of our hearts.
              In His grasp, with you,
                              Ralph and Holly Simons

A poem from June, just sitting in our driveway:

Trees reveal their secrets:
         Singing is inborn.

Wind is the bow, branches are the strings,
       leaves are the melody.
Hush, hear the beginnings, notice the
        crescendo.... marvel as the bow
  slows, and brief stillness descends.

Learn to listen, my heart.
    Prepare to wonder, my mind.
Enter in the symphony, my spirit.
                   Glory revealed.
                        Creator unveiled.
                                                  hcs

The Solar Saints Initiative Update
Doug Smithwood

If caring for the Earth during these trying time gives you hope then we have some hope to share with you. Many of you might not know about the Solar Saint Initiative. It started as an offshoot of the All Saints Solar Exploratory Committee which was formed in 2015 and lead to the installation of the 25 KW solar array on our church. In 2016 it shifted to work on the Solarize Wolfeboro Campaign to expand solar to other members of our community. In 2019, the Solar Saint Initiative sponsored Resolution #6 at the 217th Annual Diocesan Convention in Waterville Valley. The passage of this resolution committed our NH Episcopal houses of worship to lower their carbon footprint in line with the recommendation of the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). Also, in 2019 the Solar Saint Initiative began a food waste composting pilot program at the YMCA Camps North Wood and Pleasant Valley in Tuftonboro. Many people don't know that throwing food waste into landfills is a major contributor to greenhouse gases emissions. In July we were informed that we received a $35,000 grant from the US Environmental Protection Agency to do community food sustainability projects in Tuftonboro and Wolfeboro. The scope of this grant is pretty extensive and includes many partners such as four local summer camps, the Town of Wolfeboro, the Lakes Region Planning Commission and our LIFE Ministries Food Pantry to mention a few. Also, in 2019 and 2020 the Solar Saint Initiative has been directly working with Saint Paul's Church in Concord to lower their carbon footprint. In July of this year, a $34,000 lighting upgrade at Saint Paul's was completed which will lower their electricity usage by over 12,000 KWHs a year.   Solar Saints coordinated the project between Saint Paul's, the energy auditor and the electric utility. The utility paid for half of the upgrade and gave Saint Paul's a $10,000 zero interest loan that can be paid off solely through their energy savings. Saint Paul is currently starting the next phase of their energy efficiency updates.

May God Comfort All Who Mourn

Evangelyn J. Sandeen 3/12/34-8/21/20

O God of grace and glory, we remember before you our sister Vange. We thank you for giving her to us, her family and friends, to know and to love as a companion on our earthly pilgrimage. In your boundless compassion, console us who mourn. Give us faith to see in death the gate of eternal life, so that in quiet confidence we may continue our course on earth, until, by your call, we are reunited with those who have gone before; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Remembering Baptismal Anniversaries

Do you know the date of your baptism? Do you celebrate it? We remember baptism in our daily life and in our worship life. Remembering your baptism honors the promises you, and/or parents/guardians and sponsors made when you were claimed in the water and the Word. Please share your baptism date (our church records only have dates for 1/3 of us on file) with our Parish Administrator allsaints@metrocast.net.

You are encouraged to remember God's grace on your baptismal anniversary and whenever you are having a bad day because you are claimed and loved by God-no exceptions! Try remembering your baptism when you wash your face in the morning, swim or boat on the lake, when you spend time playing or rejoicing in the wonder of creation. For you have been "sealed by the Holy Spirit and marked as Christ's own forever" (BCP, 308).  Thanks be to God!

Around All Saints' This Week...

Our Sexton Mark McLaughlin has been busy painting the stairwell in the new wing. The dove grey color will hide dings and dirt better than the light yellow.

Pastor Bear made an appearance at worship this week - did you notice him?

This beautiful dahlia is brightening our Memorial Garden this week!

LISTENING AND LOOKING FOR GOD IN OUR NEIGHBORHOOD

God is up to something new. As the Holy Spirit is moving ahead of the Church, calling the Church into a new future in a time of disruptive social and cultural change, you are invited to love God and neighbor by listening and looking for what God is already doing in our community.
We listen and look to better discern what God is calling us to be a part of during this time. We listen and look to our neighborhood, those places you frequent including: where you work, where you live, where you worship, and where you play-physically and virtually during Covidtide. So as you walk and drive in your neighborhood and spaces online make note of how you see God in these spaces and share them via phone call, text, e-mail or mailed note with Pastor Bill. Be intentionally on the look-out for "God sightings" and take photos of them so they can be shared with one another here...

GOD SIGHTINGS
Please continue to share your God sightings with us!

Pastor Bill:
In the midst of the green of ordinary time peeks a little autumn red, the liturgical color used for the commemorations of martyrs and the Day of Pentecost and ordinations as it represents the Holy Spirit.

Carolyn Sundquist: So perfectly designed by God! A dahlia in my garden.

The word of God is always "in the beginning."
And this means that it is always in the process of being born and is
already born.
Now, it is the nature of the word to reveal what is hidden.
The Word that is hidden still sparkles in the darkness and whispers in the silence.
It entices us to pursue it, to yearn and sigh after it.
For it wishes to reveal to me something about God.
-Meister Eckhart (1260-1329)

MEMORIAL GARDEN PROJECT

The work on the Memorial Garden continues.   The paving stones have been ordered and have been delivered to Set 'N Stone storage location.   The time for the installation continues to be this fall.    The picture below is a sample of the wrought iron railing design to be installed along with the memorial garden pathway.

We will utilize existing memorial garden and designated memorial funds to begin the project and are exploring funding options including *engraved bricks to honor or memorialize family and friends of All Saints'. Watch future e-news for project progress and giving opportunities as they are available. If you would like to serve as a Memorial Garden Angel and make a gift to help with start-up costs, please write "Memorial Garden Angel" on your check and mail or drop it off to the church office. Connect With God & With Others
"...have you ever found God in church? I never did. I just found a bunch of folks hoping for him to show. Any God I ever felt in church I brought in with me. And I think all the other folks did too. They come to church to share God, not find God." -Alice Walker

The church is where God's people-YOU-are. While we are in exile in our homes, we don't need to go to church to find God, because when we are church together on-line we share God. There are many ways to connect, to see, hear and share God online at All Saints'...

Thank You for Giving During This Time of Pandemic

Thank you for all who have continued to support the work of All Saints during this time. You may make contributions by mail, using your financial institution's automated check writing service, or secure online giving via  Donate

Creator of all we enjoy, we give you thanks for the countless people you have gathered to do your work as All Saints' Wolfeboro. We thank you for your Holy Spirit inspiring some as they longed for this church, others as they built this church and still others as they lovingly and boldly led this church through times of abundance and times of scarcity. Help us to be bold as we model giving of time and money during this time. Make our generous giving a symbol of both our faith and our gratitude. We pray in the name of your son, Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior. Amen.
You Make A Difference

Is there an exceptional All Saints' volunteer we should recognize? Please share any recognition recommendations with our Senior Warden Carolyn Sundquist or Pastor Bill to bring to the Vestry for consideration. Who can we give thanks for the blessings they have shared with our congregation?
