Parental involvement is key to keeping kids safe. In this course, our presenter Jo McGuire, executive director of the National Drug and Alcohol Screening Association (NDASA), will provide guidance about when and how to approach the topic with kids. From the CEO: Let's Celebrate Recovery and Community
Renee Schofield
CEO TSS, Inc.

September is here, and that spells RECOVERY! This year marks the 30th anniversary of National Recovery Month. It's inspiring to see the gains made over three decades in terms of helping people find treatment, gain access and join with millions of others in sobriety.  Celebrating the successes is critical to continuing the work. To this end, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) has rolled out a great new look and website to honor the past and look forward to the future.

The theme for 2019's National Recovery Month is "Join the Voices for Recovery: Together We Are Stronger." We all know that when we work together, leveraging time, talent and focus, we can do almost anything. Throughout the month, SAMHSA is recognizing the efforts of the diverse groups of people in our communities who support recovery including emergency responders, healthcare providers, social workers, youth and emerging leaders, just to name a few.

I'm proud to say that TSS's hometown  of Ketchikan, AK has really embraced the idea of "Together We are Stronger." Building awareness around substance use and recovery is a community effort.

As an example, coming up this month we have two great community events to support the cause.  First, on Friday, September 6, Ketchikan will host Lights of Hope, an event organized by mothers of addicts, where participants gather to light colored candles symbolizing where their loved one is in the disease of addiction - white for recovery, red for struggling, black for deceased and gray for incarcerated. Bring your candles to the mall at 8:30 p.m. to recognize those you love and join your voice to those of other family members impacted by addiction.

The second annual Stomp the Stigma march and resource fair takes place on Saturday, September 7 (10 a.m. - 3 p.m.). Folks can bring a sign to celebrate those in recovery and honor those who have passed on from substance use and mental health disorders. A highlight of the event is the resource fair where multiple agencies share information and discuss local treatment options. There will also be presentations from those in recovery, some just beginning and some with long-time success. Stomp the Stigma is a great way to come together to raise awareness - one of the most important steps in reducing stigma and helping both the community and those on the journey of recovery.

These are just two National Recovery Month events happening in my town. I encourage you to look for opportunities to honor the journey of recovery in your community. September is an important time to celebrate that treatment can work and recovery can happen!

Refresher Training? What and Why

Fall is a great time for a fresh start. In the workplace, this can mean encouraging (or requiring) employees to brush up on their skills and participate in some professional development to ensure that your business has a knowledge-base you can rely on.

We frequently hear about the importance of annual refresher training. Now, we know some refresher training is required by the job, or by regulation, or by company policy but we also find that certain types of training are essential to the ongoing health of a business. In other words, there are training topics employers should be focusing on to get the best bang for the training buck. Based on our experience, there are six topics that seem to rise to the top of the list for many of the businesses we work with.

Are they on YOUR list?
Stock Your First Aid Kit Today

Safety is our business. At TSS, we are all about providing our clients with resources and education to avoid hazards and minimize chances for serious injury. With this in mind, do you know what our certified safety specialists - people who live and breath safety - say is their number one safety must-have? The answer is: a well-stocked first aid kit.

"First aid kits are so important because you never know when the unexpected will happen," says TSS team member  Larissa Greer. "Being prepared can reduce panic and provide short term care to prevent infection or keep an injury from becoming more serious."

Greer recommends always having a first aid kit within reach in the house, the car, on boats at work and in your backpack for hiking. She also advises that families can benefit from taking a first aid course so that everyone knows how to utilize the supplies in the kit and other common household items that can be useful in an emergency.
