We are pleased to welcome Midori Marsh back to Covenant this Sunday. Midori is the daughter of John and Sybil Marsh and sister of Naomi. A Canadian-American soprano, she received her BMUS in Honours Voice performance from Wilfrid Laurier University in 2017, and her opera diploma in 2018, studying with mezzo soprano Kimberly Barber. Recent opera roles include Rose Maurrant in Street Scene and Arminda in La Finta Giardiniera, both with U of T Opera, where she is currently attending graduate school to receive her MMus degree in opera, studying
with Wendy Nielsen. She just returned from the Opera in the 21st Century Program at the BANFF Centre for Arts and Creativity where she sang in two new operas; No One’s Safe and Silent Light. She has been a member of the Church of the Covenant since 2010.

Session has called a special meeting of the congregation immediately after worship on Sunday, July 28 for the purposes of acting on the request to dissolve the pastoral relationship between Rev. Melanie Marsh Baum and The Church of the Covenant.

Food Collection this Sunday
This Sunday we collect food for our Food Pantry. This is the third Sunday so food collected can be used in the bags distributed the last Wednesday and Friday of the month. The Pantry is also open Thursday afternoons for students, and for emergencies.
We can use jam or jelly, canned meat or Spam, canned chili, cereal (snack pack size), and canned vegetables.
Please place your food in the boxes at the Sanctuary entrances and financial donations marked "food pantry" in the offering.

Share Your Bulletin Ideas!
The Ministry of Faith Formation would like to learn what you
like about a worship bulletin. Share your thoughts and ideas with us in a variety of ways:
1. If you visit a church during your summer travels, bring a bulletin back with you and share it with MoFF. Let us know what you
liked about the document.
2. If your out-of-town family worships at a church and they
like their bulletin, ask them to share a copy (mail, online) so we can take a look at it.
We hope to gather documents and ideas over the next month so we can explore ways to express who we are as a faith community through our weekly worship bulletin. Documents and accompanying notes may be left in the church office (MoFF mailbox is behind the receptionist desk). Thanks for your good ideas and for remembering MoFF during your summer travels!

My Faith Journey at the Church of the Covenant

In today's Bible passage [
Ruth 1:15-22
], Ruth, recently widowed has become so close to her mother-in-law Naomi that she won’t leave her side regardless of the hardships this will cause. Ruth will go with her to Judah, Naomi’s home country, a strange land. Some of my earliest memories are of attending Sunday school here at our church from 1963 to 1967, singing in the chapel choir and receiving my first bible. My parents were involved with social justice and civil rights action here and I remember how important social justice felt to me as a child hearing the adult discussions and getting these things explained to me by my parents. I learned the Lord’s Prayer experienced worship and heard bible stories. As my parents became more involved in secular political activism our family stopped attending church. Except for a very occasional holiday or wedding I didn’t attend any church again until I faced some personal hardships in my late 20’s and felt despondent. I was living in Ashtabula at the time and started attending a small town church. After I moved back to Cleveland I met Sybil and found out she was a member here at the Covenant! It was amazing for me to visit here as an adult and then become a friend and co-volunteer with all of you. I learned lots about justice oriented theology and human history from the perspective of someone who has experienced God. Doing volunteer work with fellow church people here and in the community around us, raising our family and making friends shows me daily that God never left my side like how Ruth never left Naomi.

Last Sunday Kevin J. Lowry challenged us to take action concerning the plight of our brothers and sisters who are refugees and asylum seekers.
Living in Northeast Ohio, some asked how we might do this.
And here's a few of the many organizations that are
helping provide justice for immigrants at the border:
Zechariah 7:9-10
Thus says the Lord of hosts: Render true judgments, show kindness and mercy to one another; do not oppress the widow, the orphan, the alien, or the poor; and do not devise evil in your hearts against one another.

We pray for those struggling with illness, convalescing, or homebound; patients, family, and staff in our surrounding hospitals; our Interim Pastor Search Committee, and those who left prayer requests in our Carpenter's Box.

is away and serving the larger church as a member of the keynote and worship team at Triennium, the gathering of Presbyterian youth from across the country, from July 12 through July 19.

During July and August, the Friday Lunchtime Carillon Concert will be repeated on Sunday morning rain or shine at 11. Look for programs at the refreshments table. The tower will be open to visitors. These concerts are presented by the Friends of the McGaffin Carillon through a grant from Cuyahoga Arts and Culture.

Petition Update from God Before Guns
We have just received this update from God Before Guns, a Covenant Mission Partner,
Dear Friends & Supporters,
We hope you have seen that Ohioans for Gun Safety re-filed its initial petition with the Ohio Attorney General on Monday. Our first petition was rejected by the AG when he ruled that the summary page did not contain enough detail about the proposal. We quickly revised the summary, collected signatures, and re-filed. Note that our proposal remains the same.
