WEEKLY WEDNESDAY WRAP-AROUND
THE COMFORT OF DINING WITH FAMILY
Dear Friends:

FIRST, congratulations to all of you who were able to get out this past Sunday in spite of the effects of Barry - and to those who were unable to get out, let not your hearts be troubled. While we missed you, 'tis much better to be safe than take unnecessary risks.

The first time I celebrate communion in a new appointment, I must admit, is a little interesting as every congregation has their own logistical rituals when it comes to the partaking of the bread and cup. OF COURSE something is most likely to not go according to the way either you - or me, or both - have done so many times it becomes muscle memory.

And, yet, there is something so comforting about dining at our Lord's table in that we are reminded through the liturgy and the actions of communion that no matter where we may find ourselves, we are together with our brothers and sisters in Christ as part of the church universal and triumphant as Christ's guests.

There is something comforting about encountering these outward signs of the inward grace of God that gives us assurance of forgiveness, reconciliation, redemption, restoration, and wholeness that cannot be found elsewhere.

There is something humbling about encountering the bread and cup that is a tangible reminder for us all that we have - by omission and commission - sinned against our God, and drives us to hunger more to live according to God's will.

Let us never forget that the Lord's table, by its very existence, is a beacon that welcomes us all into the divine presence of God - no matter where, or how, or with whom, we gather. Whether kneeling at a rail or standing in line to receive via intinction, we find nourishment.

In other words, Sunday wasn't the first time we've shared communion together. Just the first time we've done it together in corporate worship at FUMC - West Monroe. (And, yes, the picture above is of our table this past Sunday.)

Grace and Peace,
Lamar

P.S. Please feel free to hit 'reply' and drop me a line - I would welcome feedback.

Erin and I cannot begin to thank you enough for the courtesy of wearing your name tags on Sunday mornings as we continue the arduous task of learning which names go with which faces.

As I mentioned on our first Sunday, please bear with us and help us by introducing yourself to us until we are able to call you by name...We have had more fun these first few weeks than we could have imagined and look forward to forging and deepening our connection to you all!
Going hand-in-hand with the name tag item, as I mentioned in an email last week I am truly excited about being able to visit with as many of you as possible in the process of discovering the greatest thing about FUMC-West Monroe - you, the people of this fine congregation!

Erin and I would welcome the chance to visit with you, and the best way to visit with as many as possible is to get together with you in groups...so...if you have a Sunday school class, Bible Study, small group, dinner club, or just a group of good friends in the church who like to get together, I would be delighted to gather at a time convenient for us all. Just 'reply' to this message and let's get the ball rolling!
WORSHIP THIS WEEK
Be sure to check your emails on Friday for our Worship this Week preview emails where you will get a brief sketch of the message for the day along with the text of the scripture from which that day's message will come!
HOW SHALL WE WORSHIP?
A CONGREGATION-WIDE BIBLE STUDY COMING THIS WEEK!
A pastoral transition and a children's ministry transition are not the only two winds of change blowing through our congregation this summer. Making the courageous decision to move to one service for the summer has required adjustment on everyone's part, and changes are not always easy - especially regarding things with which people are so emotionally attached, like, say, worship.

So as to help us during this time of discernment before we reach the end of August, EVERYONE is invited to join us for a four-week congregation-wide bible study on Psalm 96 titled, "How Shall We Worship?" The point of this study is not to drive home which way the congregation shall land on this issue but rather to help us all have a common language and framework that will be most helpful to our dialogue.

Led by Lamar, there will be two options each week for you to attend - a daytime session held at 10:00AM on Wednesday mornings and an evening session held at 5:00PM on Sunday evenings. All you are asked to bring is an open mind and a generous spirit as we explore worship from a biblical perspective. The Wednesday sessions will begin on July 24 and the Sunday evening sessions on July 21. Pay attention to your email and Sunday's bulletin for info about location.

WEEK 1 - July 21 or 24 | WEEK 2 - July 28 or 31
WEEK 3 - August 4 or August 7 | WEEK 4 - August 11 or 14

CHILDCARE IS AVAILABLE FOR THE SUNDAY EVENING SESSIONS - PLEASE CONTACT KATHY IN THE CHURCH OFFICE IF YOU NEED THIS SERVICE. So as to make sure we have adequate resources on hand, reservations are REQUIRED for childcare.
