THE SEASON OF LENT
What is Lent?

Lent is the 40 day period of repentance and renewal preceding Easter.  Lent begins on Ash Wednesday and ends with the Easter Service.  The observance of Lent first appeared between 200-300 CE. The 40 days of Lent are like the 40 days Jesus spent in the wilderness in spi ritual preparation, temptation, struggling with Satan and choosing God's will -- which led him to the way of the cross.  The Lenten period allows us time to recall the Easter story and absorb its meaning.  To count the 40 days, you leave off the Sundays.

Where does the word come from?

"Lent" is from the Anglo-Saxon word "lencten", meaning springtime.

What are some of the ways believers are encouraged to observe Lent?

Penitential Practices  -- Fasting and self-denial enable us to better understand the full meaning of Easter.  Some people choose to give up something for Lent.  Followers of some traditions, such as the Roman Catholics, will give up meat on Friday.  Many non-Catholics choose to do this as well, or choose to give up a type of food or drink they enjoy for the entire period -- or something else.

Giving for Others  -- Intentionally giving one's time, energy and possessions for others, especially the needy, helps us connect with how Christ gave himself for us.

Resolution  -- Recalling Christ's suffering encourages us to strive for more Christian habits and attitudes.  Instead of giving something up for Lent, some people choose to add some type of good practice for the period of Lent.

Repentance  -- Remembering personal shortcoming, and coming before God for forgiveness can lead to inner renewal.

Participation - - Special Lenten and Holy Week worship service help worshipers renew and strengthen their faith.

UMM BREAKFAST - MARCH 7
Author and chaplain Robert Ruesch: "In the Warmth of the Shadow"

When a person is adopted, life is unique in many ways. Many times there is no history; you don't know who you look like or what your past is, and not knowing your past impacts your future. But what if you were adopted into a family that spent their summers in paradise, close to Rocky Mountain National Park? Robert Ruesch was that boy, and in his book he tells the story of being raised in a place that many view as a high altitude paradise. How did God's grace and mercy come into focus for a boy, the Rocky Mountains and summers at Estes Park YMCA? Join us on March 7 and find out. All church members and friends are invited to Robert's 8:30 presentation.

MOVIES THAT MATTER

The Church & Society Team invites you to join them for a cinematic journey to watch some of the best movies that send a clear message for how to apply our faith in the world.

On Friday, March 13th at 7pm we'll be showing "Same Kind of Different As Me". Based on the NY Times bestselling novel, the movie tells the true story of the relationship between a white, wealthy art dealer and a black man who suffers homelessness, poverty, racism, and even modern-day slavery.

After the movie, we'll gather in our Fellowship Hall for dessert and discussion. Our goal is to be entertained, but also to learn and take action, when we can, to make a difference in our world.

MISSIONS MEXICAN LUNCHEON
On Sunday, March 15th after the 10:30 Service, join the  UMCE Missions Team for their annual Mexican Lunch. Please stay after church and treat yourself to a hassle free lunch of chips, salsa, tacos, tortillas and other scrumptious Mexican dishes. Mac's famous sopapillas will be served!  There is no charge, but donations are always welcome.

This year your donations will go to support the UMCE Youth Missions trip to La Veta, Colorado this summer. They will be assisting with reforesting the area devastated by wildfires.

CELEBRATION OF MUSIC

On Wednesday, March 18th, please join us for a Lenten concert performed by Foothills Community Choir. Enjoy a light supper at 5:30pm with the concert at 7pm. Please invite your family, friends and neighbors! All are welcome!

DO YOU KNOW WHAT AN ENDOWMENT FUND IS AND
HOW IT OPERATES?

The Fund is established and operated exclusively for charitable purposes with its principal objects being the promotion and development of religious, charitable and educational activities; and for nonrecurring purposes not regularly budgeted. It provides members and friends of UMCE with the opportunity to make charitable gifts to the church that will become a permanent endowment for financial support.

The principal of the Fund cannot be used. A portion of the income (reinvestments and interest) from undesignated gifts may be distributed for use by the Church. One-half may be made available to the Trustees to use for facility care and improvement. One-half may be made available to the Missions Team for missions outreach.  Both of these distributions are subject to Church Council approval. The Endowment Fund cannot be used for programs of the church that are regularly budgeted and funded by pledges and other donations, except in cases of extreme emergency to be approved by the Church Council and Charge Conference.

Do you know how the Endowment Fund donations are invested?

Our Endowment Fund is currently invested in the Mountain Sky United Methodist Foundation. The Foundation does socially responsible investing in equities, fixed income funds and money market accounts.

NEW LOCATION FOR THE REST OF THE EVERGREEN SHELTER SEASON
Our Evergreen Shelter Program, which has been providing emergency nightly shelter on a rotating weekly basis at five of our partner churches, has been offered a opportunity to partner with the local nonprofit, Spero Recovery Center, to house the program there for the remaining weeks of the shelter.

The space they are offering to us has private spaces for each of the ESP guests, as well as showers, on-site laundry, and a full kitchen. Spero also hosts AA and NA meetings on site, also available to any of the guests. Their location is very close to Evergreen High School and Wilmot Elementary School, so guests without cars can utilize the Flex Ride bus service. EChO will provide case management at Spero in the morning before guests leave.

After ESP's Leadership Team recently toured the Spero Recovery Center, it was unanimously decided to take advantage of this tremendous opportunity. Spero has been making some renovations to make their facilities clean, safe, and comfortable for the ESP clients. Shelter rules/policies will be updated to fit the new space. We will still follow our current schedule/rotations for the volunteers needed nightly. Changes will go out to all volunteers as soon as they are completed, and there will be a few open houses at the new space to get everyone oriented.

FIRE AT ALBERTON UMC
ALBERTON UMC {MONTANA} SUFFERS SUBSTANTIAL DAMAGE DUE TO FIRE BY ARSON

Stacey King, spouse of Rev. Waveland King, sent the following letter to the conference about Alberton United Methodist Church {Montana} after the church was vandalized and set on fire Feb. 3.

To all my brothers & sisters in our conference,

I am so grateful for all of the support and prayers we have received as people have learned about the fire at our little historic Alberton Church. It definitely helps with the grieving process knowing so many of you are holding us in prayer.

The damage to the church was substantial from both the fire and the vandalism. Although the building is still standing and intact, most of the contents are being considered a loss. This includes our pews, some artwork, the lectern bible, the oil candles, paraments, hymnals and pew bibles. The altar, pulpit, baptismal font and stained glass were all saved and will be cleaned. The fellowship hall and kitchen in the basement will be gutted. There is a lot of lost history and memorial gifts for our folks to grieve.

If you feel moved to participate in giving to the special offering we have established, we will add your witness of God's love to ours.

Besides financial help, the Alberton folks could also use notes of encouragement and love as well as continued prayers. While renovation of our worship space and building will take many months, we also celebrate that no one was hurt and that the Body of Christ in Alberton, Montana is alive and well. Thanks be to God!
