Dear FVS Community,

Greetings from the Prairie and happy Monday! I hope the weekend provided some much deserved rest and that the week is off to a good start. With many students in quarantine, others departing for home, and our weather transitioning toward winter, campus has been particularly quiet.

By this Friday most of our students in quarantine will have completed the required 14-days. We anticipate a number of departures over the weekend and we ask that you please make sure that all leave requests are updated in REACH. Please contact the Deans’ Office with questions by emailing deansoffice@fvs.edu

Last week and the time ahead are in many respects a dry run for the two-weeks of virtual classes that will take place between Fall and Winter Breaks, as well as the two weeks of quarantine when we reconvene in January. I’m proud of the way our community has pivoted on short notice, and though the circumstances are less than ideal, I believe that there is opportunity in this current challenge to work out the kinks, set norms, and establish lines of communication between students, their advisers, classmates, and teachers. As a result, we will be all the more better positioned and prepared.

With that, in last week’s communications, I shared that distance learning would continue through at least November 13, which is this Friday. As we review the number of students that will remain on campus, faculty in quarantine, and the risks associated with convening in person, we have determined that distance learning will continue through the beginning of Fall Break. El Paso County continues to experience a rapid rise in cases, positivity rates, and hospitalizations, and as noted previously, our goal has shifted to ensuring that as many students as possible are able to return home on or before November 20.

Meanwhile, we will continue to gather feedback and refine our distance learning platform to ensure that we offer a robust and manageable academic program that supports both engaged learning as well as the mental health and well-being being of our students and faculty.

We will continue to communicate as needed this week and next, but please know that if you do not receive a daily update it is not a cause for alarm, but rather a sign of stability. In the meantime, take good care, stay safe and be well.

Sincerely,

William Webb
