SJM Strategic Plan: Update on Catholic Identity
By: Clarissa Myers, Director of Campus Ministry
A lot has been happening with Memorial's Catholic Identity over the past few years. The most notable accomplished goals from the strategic plan include solidifying a full-time Service Coordinator position in the 2017-18 school year, establishing the "Partners in Faith" Catholic identity volunteer support team in 2018-19, and offering All Class Mass/Formation Hour services every month of the school year since the 2016 fall semester.
The impact of a full-time Service Coordinator has allowed for more one-on-one mentoring with students and more consistent service immersion experiences. It has also led to record breaking success in service completion as well as the establishment of the Distinguished Service Award, which identifies seniors who go above and beyond in service to marginalized populations.
The "Partners in Faith" support team, though fairly new, has a lot of enthusiasm. The team is comprised of alumni, current and former parents, and other community supporters of SJM who work on projects and initiatives that support the faith life of the school. A couple of these initatives include a prayer team and a group focused on religiously themed campus beautification projects. The All Class Masses and Formation Hour services cater to each specific grade level to offer more engaging and supportive spiritual experiences, and works to promote class unity. The Catholic Identity Committee is proud of these and other goals accomplished in the recent past and look forward to further promoting and strengthening Memorial's ever present Catholic Identity.
SJM's Catholic Identity Strategic Plan Mission Statement:
San Joaquin Memorial High School will exemplify its identity as a Roman Catholic school founded on Gospel values through faith formation, worship, campus ministry, and service opportunities, in order to manifest these values within our school, our families, our parishes, and our community.
Emilio Carvalho Takes Aim at Junior Olympics in Bunker Trap Shooting
Emilio Carvalho, a 10th grader at San Joaquin Memorial, is pursuing his dream of representing the United States and the Olympic pathway in International Bunker Trap shooting competition.
S
JM's resident shooting athlete, Emilio's biggest accomplishment to date is winning the Bronze Medal inInternational Bunker Trap this past June at the 2019 National Junior Olympics in Colorado Springs, CO. He was the high scorer going into the finals, where he fought hard and secured theBronze Medal spot on the podium.
That win placed Emilio on the National USA Shooting Junior Olympic Team and earned him his second National USA Team Vest. He earned his first team vest in 2018 when he competed in his first International Bunker Trap Competition and made the National SCTP International Team for 2018-2019.
Emilio will be competing in the 2020 Olympic Trials (Part 1) on September 6-14 in Kerrville, TX. Just before school started, he competed in a preliminary match, again in Kerrville, where he placed 3rd in Juniors.
Emilio was first introduced to American Trap
Shooting, at age nine, through 4-H shooting sports. After several accomplished years in trap shooting, Emilio applied for an International Bunker Trap development camp at the Olympic training center in Colorado Springs. He was selected as one of 12 to attend by the Scholastic Clay Target Program.
International Bunker Trap throws target speeds twice as fast, approximately 70 mph, and more varied target heights than American Trap. An Olympic sport, International Bunker Trap will be part of the Japan 2020 Olympics.
Congratulations Emilio for representing the United States and your fellow SJM Panthers with honor through your Olympic pursuits!
Girls Volleyball Goes to Hawaii
Memorial's Girls Volleyball team
had an amazing time this past weekend when they headed to Hawaii for a tournament. The trip was a great opportunity for the girls to bond as a team and to also play against 24 other teams from around the nation. The Panther's won 6 of their 9 games and finished 1st in the silver division. The tournament hosted a banquet for all of the teams where our Panther's were able to learn traditional Hula dance and interact with other players. On Sunday, before the team headed for the mainland, they attended Mass at St. Joseph's Church located near Hapuna State Beach.
SJM's New App!
We are taking another step into the world of social media and have created an app just for San Joaquin Memorial. This new app can be downloaded for free by searching "San Joaquin Memorial" anywhere you download apps. For now, the app serves as a great resource to receive information about what's going on around campus. In time, the app will also serve as a platform to aid in our students' education.
Three to four parents are needed to set up and staff the Mass Hospitality Room for each school Mass. The time slot is between 8:30-11:00 am, more hours available if the volunteer is also willing to do the shopping. Please contact Clarissa Myers to connect to this volunteer opportunity,
[email protected] or ext. 143.
Boosters Club
Boosters members take pride in raising money for our student-athletes through fun-filled, casual fundraisers - Holy Bowling in the fall; Crab Feed in February - concession sales and memberships.
