Worship
Morning Worship: Waking Our Senses to the Missives of I Am

We eat the holy with our red tongues, swap sparks with the holy through our bare and tender feet, invite the holy to dance on our delicate retinas, and scoop up the vibrations of the holy’s peals and rumbles made by animal, mineral, vegetable, and other. All of this we can do passively, without so much as a whiff of awareness. But how alive we know ourselves to be when we notice, name, and relish in the sacred spaces we co-create with the divine!

Teresa Honey Youngblood is a credentialed religious educator, a hospital chaplain, author of the book Spirited Homeschooling, and a Family Ministry Coordinator for Soul Matters. She feels most like herself when she’s writing with smooth, blue pens; listening for birdsongs in the wilds of the Ozark mountains; reading really good books aloud to children and youth; baking biscuits; and tending the worms in her front yard herb and veggie garden.at SUUSI.
Evening Worship: SUUSI Teen-Led Worship

All are welcome for our annual Teen-led service, dreamed, created, and offered to our beloved SUUSI community in their own unique words, ways, and wisdom. Ever new and rich with myriad perspectives, this service is a favorite every time!
Contribute to the Friday Worship Altar

All are invited to bring a small meaningful item, perhaps something that represents the sacred, to be placed on the shared altar at the Friday evening Worship. To participate further (setup, readings, etc.) contact Rev Amy Beltaine @ 503-877-2692.

Meet Your Board Candidates!
Shelby Ferncrombie for Youth Board Rep

My name is Shelby Ferncrombie. I am 16 years old and I attend All Souls Church in Washington DC. This is my 11th year at SUUSI . SUUSI is not just a camp, but a community to me. I enjoy the programming at SUUSI, such as TWOB , but more importantly I value the relationships I have made at SUUSI over the years with so many amazing people. I love that SUUSI is the kind of place where I can sit with anyone in the cafeteria and start up a conversation.

I am running for youth board representative because I want to help bring the youth voice to meetings and address topics that are important to the teen and youth attendees of SUUSI. In particular I would like youth and teens to have more interaction with other age groups at SUUSI. Youth and teens can feel isolated from the rest of SUUSI when we only go to our own programming and in the teens’ case when we just stay in our dorm. There should be more opportunities for us to be with the rest of SUUSI. For example, in past SUUSIS touch group meetings conflicted with community time, so many teens were unable to go to community time. Teens and youth are an important part of the SUUSI community, so it would be good to have more opportunities for us to participate in community activities.

Gail Cyan for SUUSI Board
Hello SUUSI friends, My name is Gail Cyan – I would like to serve on the SUUSI board! Remember my name at the ballot: giving Gail, gay Gail, goofy Gail, gullible Gail, groggy (morning) Gail, gutsy Gail, gleeful Gail, grateful GAIL — that’s me!

I bring with me a lot of leadership experience, a visionary outlook, and lots of enthusiasm! This is my lucky 13th SUUSI. I come each year to fill my spiritual cup. My young adult kids have grown up in this loving, adventurous community and it’s time for me to give back! I have served my home congregation in Dayton, Ohio in many different leadership capacities, but most recently as Board President for two years; during which time, our beloved minister died suddenly and I was responsible for leading our congregation through a difficult period of grief and transition. I learned so much in the aftermath of his death about the strength of building community and the value of having a strong vision for our future.

Why the SUUSI board? I love team sports–collaboration and consensus building is my middle name! I have served SUUSI on workshop, teen, communications, and registration staff for the past 9 years. I get all geeked out about smart, empowering policy–every board needs a couple ‘those’ people. And I am an empty-nester with some time on my hands. I am particularly passionate about activism in the Black Lives Matter movement and, as an artist, I love creative challenges.

Grateful giddy Gail humbly asks for your vote for SUUSI Board!
Elizabeth Cameron for SUUSI Board

Dear Beloved SUUSI Community, My name is Elizabeth Mitsuki Cameron and I attend the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Fredericksburg. I have been attending SUUSI for five years and for the last three I have been a teen leader and been on youth staff. I want to be on the board to help make a positive impact on the community that has shaped me into the young woman I am today. As a board member I would represent the young adult community and advocate for the people of color in our SUUSI community. Thank you and please consider voting for me. Blessed Be.

Marina Demoraes for Youth Board Rep

My name is Marina Demoraes and I am looking to be on the board next year! I currently serve as the youth representative for the board of my congregation (river of grass) in south Florida. I believe this gives me a lot of experience with what this position entails.
Bethany Cecere for SUUSI Board

 This year is my 19th SUUSI – it is my favorite intentional community/working vacation/friend-reunion/spiritual renewal!

During my first year attending SUUSI, I volunteered to drive the Star Car . I was a young adult, and didn’t know many people, including SUUSI-goers from my own church, and volunteering was a great way to learn the campus while meeting and helping people. In subsequent years, I signed up for a “more realistic number” of workshops, and added working in the SUUSI Store and leading various workshops to my SUUSI volunteering.

For the last ten years, I’ve served the SUUSI Community by leading the Artisans’ Bazaar . In that time, the Bazaar has grown in many ways:

  • we have nearly tripled the number of artists featured;
  • we have a year-round Facebook community just for current and former SUUSI Artisans to talk about our projects and provide support to one another;
  • we are open more than twice as many hours and added a Sunday night grand opening;
  • we have increased income to artists and SUUSIships;
  • we have more staffing;
  • we also now are part of SUUSI Services, with a tie-in to Workshops for registration purposes.

Each of these improvements have happened in discussion with the SUUSI Board or Core Staff . Within my tenure, we have also overcome a few last-minute struggles – most notably with location changes.

In the other 51 weeks of the year, I work as an emergency operations officer. I can juggle multiple issues/tasks, and work well under pressure. I’ve worked on several projects with a variety of stakeholders, some quite contentious, where I’ve built consensus. Since 2013, I’ve chaired a non-profit group that holds an annual festival with an attendance of 2,500 people. I also volunteered in 2015 with a state-wide, non-profit organization to hold an event with international attendance of over 5,000 people. I’ve been a Coming of Age mentor, youth group advisor, Religious Education teacher for children and adults, stewardship co-chair, and chaperone for three Coming of Age trips to the UUA. I’m also a wife and billet (host) mom to two junior hockey players.

In recent years, multiple people have asked me when I might do something else for SUUSI – in addition to leading the Artisans’ Bazaar. Serving on the SUUSI Board seems like the best way to advance my giving to this beloved community. Please allow me to represent you on the SUUSI Board.
Marie Steel for SUUSI Board

My name is Marie Steel. From the moment I walked on to the Radford Suusi campus in 2007 I knew I was home. This is my 13th year at Suusi and I have been on teen staff, night life dance venue coordinator and for the past 3 years I have been your greeter at registration staff. My passion is music and Old School of Rock. As life chips away at my soul throughout the year I pull up to suusi and during that week, this community fills the gaps with joy, laughter, song and dance and refreshes my heart once again. I am committed to share my time, treasure and talent with this community.

Preston Riegel for SUUSI Board

My name is Preston Riegel, you’ve probably run into me at some point, but as much as I would love to, I will never have enough time to get to know everyone at SUUSI as well as I would like to. So here is my short introduction, if you want to get to know more about me come find me in the young adult dorm or around campus, I will always be willing to have a conversation with you. I’m from Michigan and I’m the child of not one, but two UU ministers so my life at home is about as full of meditation as you imagine. My father wants to turn one of the rooms in our house into a meditation space. In true UU fashion, that has remained nothing but an idea for a number of years. The more I learn about SUUSI, the more I come to love this place I call home. People have met lovers and lifelong friends. There are still always changes that could be made. But unlike my father’s meditation space, I would like these changes to be made, reviewed, and possibly even become the traditions we know and love
Wednesday Dance Themes

 Ballroom Hour at Serendipity on Wednesday will focus on Swing Dance. East Coast, West Coast, Jive … we will have all the swing rhythms and tempos. We will still be playing a mix of other dances too for variety. From 9:30pm, to 10:30 in the Serendipity dance venue.

The costume theme for Serendipity is Shiny, and the theme for CACHE is Pajama Night.
Serendipity 2020!

Like to craft? Serendipity 2020 needs paper flower creators. We also need ideas for 2020 Serendipity or CACHE themes. Contact Nightlife@suusi.org.
Sports & Games
Today is the SUUSI softball game at 10 am. We need players! Please come! For basketball fans, join us in the WCU gym for pickup games at 4 pm. Then...the Fun Run and 5K! We’ve changed things around and it will be at Community Time this year, starting promptly at 4:30. At 6 pm we’re hosting a family friendly kickball game in the Community Time greenspace. Then later tonight... BATTLESHIP! Come to the WCU pool to watch your SUUSI friends as they try and sink their opponents' canoes. Who will be the last boat floating?!?
SUUSI Explorers
Whether this is your first SUUSI or your tenth, you might sometimes find yourself unsure about diving into the social scene. SUUSI Explorers is a new program that will offer a hosted tour of some of the best SUUSI has to offer. Today, choose from these activities:

Explorers and their host will meet in the seating area outside the dining hall (or the downstairs lobby, if it’s raining) and walk to each event together.

SUUSI Promises
Look for SUUSI Promises… prompt cards on the tables in the dining hall during Wednesday dinner, and downstairs through Thursday lunch. Each color card has a different prompt. Place completed cards in the blue Nurture Box at the bottom of the dining hall stairs. Look for cards in CACHE and Serendipity , and in all the dorms by Tuesday mid-day, with collection boxes in each location.

Also, drop-in to any ONE of these workshops to explore these questions as we create our SUUSI Covenant ( Workshops are held in Blue Ridge 270)

  • Wednesday 2-4 pm
  • Thursday 10 am-noon.
Attention Parents!

Remember to bring your car seats/booster seats for your child if they are participating in a Family Friendly Nature Trip. In North Carolina, children are required to use a car seat or booster seat until they are at least 8 years old or 80 pounds. Nature Staff will not be able to transport a child without the proper seat.

Youth Dance Party
There will be a dance party for Youth aged 0-10 this evening from 6:30-8:30 in the Illusions Cafe on the 3rd floor of University Center. Youth Staff will be present to coordinate the event, but parents must stay to chaperone their children.

There will be a tour of the Teen Dorm for parents of 13-year-olds on Thursday at 5:15 in Scott Residence Hall. You’ll have a chance to meet the Teen Directors, see the dorm, and get your questions answered. All parents and guardians of 13-year-olds are invited to attend.

Reduce Plastic at BBQUUSI

BBQuusi is when we fire up the grills late at night at Hillside Grind and hang out together. In an effort to reduce single-use plastic waste, please bring your cup or refillable water bottle. The fun starts at 1:30am. See you tonight!
Come Hear the Music Play......
Concert Hour

In the current national nightmare, we need to laugh and we need to hope. Roy’s signature blend of heart and hilarity has never been more necessary. In a career spanning more than thirty years, Roy’s songs have been heard on HBO and Showtime, and his videos have garnered tens of millions of views on social media. With his satirical folk quartet The Foremen he recorded for Warner/Reprise Records. Roy has shared stages with Bill Maher, Ellen DeGeneres, Holly Near, Robin Williams, Arlo Guthrie, John Oliver, The Roches, Andy Borowitz, The Chambers Brothers, Kate Clinton and George Carlin. Roy’s website is www.royzimmerman.com.
Cabaret

After Concert Hour, stay for Cabaret at 9:30! It's Wednesday night at Cabaret and there's a great line-up, starting with the SUUSIBOYZ, and followed by Amy Carol Webb, Eric Bannan, The Guest Room (always a treat), Angel Wall, and other wonderful performers. The doors at Coulter are locked at 11:00, so if you arrive after that be sure to come to the doors in the back of the building and we'll let you in.

And...be thinking about Jamboree on Friday night. This is a chance to perform with new people and show off all the amazing things that happened in workshops and informal music gatherings during the week. Time slots are still available, so come to the Cabaret table to sign up and get ready to enjoy an awesome night of entertainment.
SUUSI Store NUUS
Besides satisfying your cravings for great books and awesome music, the SUUSI Store provides ways for you to help make the SUUSI experience available to those who might otherwise not be able to afford it by raising money for SUUSIShips. One of the easiest ways is through our KISSES FOR SUUSISHIPS program. Whenever – and wherever – you make a purchase through the SUUSI Bookstore, simply round up to the nearest dollar (or more). We’ll donate that amount to SUUSIships, and give you a FREE KISS (of the Hershey chocolate variety).

You can also support SUUSIships by entering the SUUSI Store Raffle – and have the chance to win either a basket full of CDs donated by all of our fabulous musicians OR a $100 Gift Certificate to the SUUSI Store! Tickets are 1 for $1.00, 12 for $10.00 or 25 for $20.00. Winning tickets will be drawn Thursday night at 10:00 pm at Cabaret – although you do not need to be present to win – with all monies collected going to SUUSIships!

LAST YEAR’S MUG BOOKS: If you paid for a Mug Book last year – or the year before – and never picked it up, we have it at the SUUSI Store. Please come get it now. Any not claimed by the end of the week will be thrown out!
Thanking Our Hosts

The staff at WCU works extremely hard to make SUUSI run smoothly. Take a moment at Community Time to sign cards to thank them! Cards will be available on Wednesday and Thursday.
