Lectionary 33, Year A
24th Sunday after Pentecost
Sunday, November 15, 10:30am
In-person and Online
|
Our readings during November speak of the end times. Zephaniah proclaims that the coming day of the Lord will be filled with wrath and distress. Paul says it will come like a thief in the night and urges us to be awake and sober. Jesus tells the parable of the talents, calling us to use our gifts, while we still have time, for the greater and common good. In a world filled with violence and despair, we gather around signs of hope—word, water, bread, and wine—eager to welcome the good news of Christ's coming among us.

New AdventELC Kids Feature!
|
Each week we will provide quick and simple daily activities for you to do at home to help children learn more about God!
|
|
|
Our Thanksgiving Ingathering has provided a GREAT amount of meals to those in need in the greater Columbus area for years. This year the need is, once again, considerable. The impact of COVID-19 cannot be understated.
|
|
There are two ways to give:
- Donate Online at AdventELC.org/donate. Select Thanksgiving Ingathering to ensure that your donation goes to the appropriate place. All donations in their entirety go to LSS Food Pantries. For a $1 donation, the pantries can purchase $5.25 worth of food. Everyone wins with a cash donation.
- Grab a (reusable) bag from the church narthex (lobby) and return the bag filled only with:
- 2 pouches or one box of mashed potatoes
- 2 cans of fruit (peaches, applesauce, pears, etc.)
- 3 cans of green beans
- 2 cans of corn
- 2 cans of pumpkin
- 1 can of cranberry sauce
- 1 box or bag of stuffing mix
- 1 turkey gravy packet
- 1 boxed yellow cake mix
There is a bin located at the East entrance of the church with the list of items and the bags to be filled if the church is closed.
**Food bags may be dropped off at the church on Sunday morning or the Sunday evening of November 15th from 6:00 to 7:30 PM.
The last day for food bag or monetary donations is Sunday, November 15th

With the fact that we haven't been able to have a potluck here at the church in quite some time, and the Thanksgiving holiday may look different for many of us, we here at AdventELC are asking you to share with the congregation some of your favorite recipes you enjoy this time of year.
Simply fill in the spaces on the form to tell us how to make your delicious dish!
We will publish the recipes in a special E-Herald edition on Sunday, November 22.

Operation Christmas Child
|
This endeavor, sponsored by Samaritan’s Purse, is part of the world’s largest Christmas project of its kind. Operation Christmas Child uses gift-filled shoeboxes to share God’s love in a tangible way with needy children around the world. These shoeboxes are filled with small toys, hygiene items, and school supplies. The Social Concerns Team has collected filled shoeboxes at Advent for a number of years. Understandably, we will not be doing that this year. Instead, we are encouraging members to take advantage of a new option – building a shoebox online! Please see the following for more information: https://build-a-shoebox.samaritanspurse.org/view/de975cab-38a9-4379-85c8-7f385b90806c

Thanksgiving Eve Worship
Wednesday, November 25, 7:00pm
In-Person and Online
|
Plan to join us as we gather together in a spirit of thankfulness at our Thanksgiving Eve Communion Service on Wednesday, November 25, at 7:00pm.
|
|
In his Proclamation of Thanksgiving on October 3, 1863, President Abraham Lincoln wrote:
"It has seemed to me fit and proper that God should be solemnly, reverently, and gratefully acknowledged, as with one heart and one voice, by the whole American people. I do therefore invite my fellow citizens in every part of the United States, and also those who are at sea and those who are sojourning in foreign lands, to set apart and observe the last Thursday of November as a day of Thanksgiving and praise to our beneficent Father who dwelleth in the heavens."

50th Annual Live Nativity
Sunday, December 6, 5:30p-7:00pm
Drive Thru
|
This year marks AdventELC's 50th annual offering of the Live Nativity! Over the years our methods for presenting the good news to the community has been modified from time to time, but the message has always been the same, "Jesus is the reason for the season."
|
|
This year due to our sincere desire to keep everyone safe from COVID coupled with our sincere desire to share the good news of the Messiah's birth, we are making a change. We will be presenting the Christmas story in person via drive thru! There will be six stations of volunteers in costumes acting out different parts of the Christmas story. We will ask drivers to tune their car radios in to a specific frequency as we broadcast on a short wave FM transmitter members of AdventELC reading the Christmas story from Luke 2 with Christmas music as well.
Is it different? Yes! Is it faithful? Yes! Is it something that you will want to invited others to? Yes! Is it something we'll need volunteers for? Yes! We estimate that we will need a total of 48 volunteers over two, forty-five minute shifts. If you are interested in volunteering to be a actor or a traffic monitor, please email Matt Pittman at matpitt@yahoo.com for more information.

We are in need of folks for one hour slots at 11, 12, 1, 2, 3. Please contact Pastor Saunders at 614-632-0428 or

Blue Christmas
Saturday, December 19, 7:00pm
In-Person only
|
Has 2020 left you feeling blue? Yes, blue as in the blues. As in "I am feeling blue." Not everyone is up and cheery for the Christmas holidays.
|
|
Dealing with the death of a loved one, facing life after divorce or separation, coping with the loss of a job, living with cancer or some other disease that puts a question mark over the future, and a number of other human situations make parties and joviality painful for many people.
We at AdventELC care about you and want to give you a space and a place to feel and to bring your feelings to the very same God who meets us where we are at Christmas. This service is designed to be reflective, healing and hopeful.
