This Week's Shir Chadash To-Do List
  • Please note the new times for services this week. We're getting earlier!

Please ignore any and all email requests for gift cards that purport to come from Rabbi Silver - they don't!
Elul - The Final Count Down!
Please do read and enjoy the daily email, which has been curated by Rabbi Amy Levin of the Masorti Movement in Israel. Please take a moment each day to let the sound of Josh Sands’ Shofar call to you. And on Shabbat, let us take some time to dream what this new year might hold in store.
Let's hear that shofar blow!

Stay Connected!
Spread the Smiles
We know that these last few months have been unlike any other and that we have all had to adjust to our new way of life in quarantine. We hope that along with all the change we have experienced, there have been moments of laughter and lots of smiles - and we would love to hear about them!
If you would like to contribute,
e-mail us at shirchadash@shirchadash.org, and spread the smiles!

Here are some entries from this past week:
We welcome

Shul School Corner
This year, our Shul School programs are adapting to the pandemic by going online through at least January 2021. With the help of the Goldring/Woldenberg Institute for Southern Jewish Life, we have adapted our existing shul school curriculum to be accessible via Zoom, and with the input of parents in our community, we're exploring innovative ways to teach Hebrew reading skills, prayer, Torah, and Jewish traditions to our elementary-aged congregants, and to prepare our young congregants who are approaching b'nai Mitzvah for that simcha.

The Shul School registration pack is nearly ready and will be e-mailed next week.

Shabbat Shalom!
Dear Shir Chadash community,

I just want to say this again:

PLEASE GO TO OUR WEBSITE AND CHECK OUT OUR HIGH HOLYDAYS OFFERINGS!

The High Holydays Task Force has been working steadily since the middle of the summer to bring you the broadest possible range of High Holydays experiences even in this most challenging of times.

All this means we will be sending a few more emails and updates than usual.  Please watch your inboxes for more information, and please reach out to those in our community who might not be tech-savvy so that you can help bring the High Holydays to them.

I want to use this space personally to thank the Task Force.  They have been inventive, resourceful, creative, generous, wise and frankly indispensable:
Ben Horwitz, Chair
Ken Klein, President
Ricardo Totah, Executive Director
Julie Finger
Deena Gerber
Bob Kutcher
Danny Mintz
Will Samuels
Mark Schleifstein
Henry Weber

Onwards to Rosh Hashanah we go!

I wish us a Shabbat full of anticipation.

Rabbi Silver

PS - I always provide a few new links for Shabbat, so please scroll down…
This Shabbat is the anniversary of 9/11.
Please take a moment to remember.

View a reading HERE by Billy Collins, former U.S. poet laureate, of his poem, "The Names", honoring the victims of September 11th.
Virtual services and
pre/post Shabbat materials
We hope that playing these in the background has been getting you in the mood for Shabbat!

Here is our Shabbat playlist and for our younger members, here is the Shir Chadash Youtube page, where you can spend some time with Miss Meryl and the Shabbat dinosaur!
And a taste of Shalom Sesame’s Rosh Hashanah Hannah!
Please join us for Kabbalat Shabbat at this link on Friday night at 6:00 PM. PLEASE NOTE THE NEW EARLIER START TIME!

No Community Havdalah this week - please join us for Selichot at 8:30 PM.
Shabbat morning liturgy at home
I hope that by now we are in the habit of making a computer-free time on Shabbat to pray, to reflect and to study.

You can find an online Siddur here - please download before Shabbat.

At the end of this article is Rabbi Wayne Dosick’s prayer to say in place of Kaddish.
Parashot Nitzavim + Vayeilech
Torah: Deuteronomy 29:9 - 30:14
Maftir: Deuteronomy 30:11-14
Haftarah: Isaiah 61:10 - 63:9
Torah study

The Torah reading for this week is in the red panel above. If you do not have a Humash at home you can find it on the link below. We are reading Triennial Year 1, but you might like to read the full portion (“Full Kriyah”).

Here is a beautiful piece by Reb Mimi Feigelson (if you want to watch the embedded video, please do so before or after Shabbat).

And another from Matan about inclusion.
Brochure

Our Shabbat brochure with the Verse To Live By, yahrzeits, and simchas for this week is attached. You might wish to take special notice of those who are sick and take a moment to direct your thoughts towards them.
Prayer for Medical Workers

We first created this prayer in the first week of the pandemic.  It is as relevant now as it was then.  Many members of our community are healthcare workers and have been steadily doing their best, day by day, to help deal with this unprecedented situation.  You might wish to print out this prayer and make it part of your daily practice…
Holy One
We ask your blessing for our doctors
for our nurses
for all our hospital workers
who stand between the living and the dying
as Aaron once stood.

Help them to know they are not alone
as they undertake the overwhelming holy work
of deploying and organizing,
of caring and healing and comforting.

Bring them strength
and fortitude
and grace.

May the work of their hands be blessed.
And we say,
Amen.
