Dear 7th District Community,
We have reached the end of the year as we welcome 2022. While the holiday season is in full swing, I want to take a moment to reflect, and express gratitude. I am grateful for the healthcare workers, front line workers, community organizations, and small businesses for their leadership and support during this pandemic. As we come to the end of another challenging year, my office worked together with numerous community partners to provide COVID vaccinations, testing, food and PPE distribution while also providing housing resources and information including property tax appeal workshops.
I introduced and passed several legislative items in Cook County to respond to the ongoing pandemic. Some of the legislative pieces include the COVID-19 Vaccination Rights for Employees and Employer Obligations Ordinance which protects employees from retaliation for taking leave from work to receive a COVID-19 vaccination; and budget amendment to increase court services for domestic violence survivors to address the increase of intimate partner violence incidents. I am thankful for the collective effort and commitment to continue serving the communities in the 7th district. I look forward to continuing working with the community to move forward with recovery efforts in the new year.

Destination: Vaccination is a program that aims to remove the transportation barrier for many Cook County residents, by providing rides to and from vaccination sites to Suburban Cook County residents and Chicago residents who wish to utilize a Cook County location.
Vaccination is free of cost, residents who need a ride to receive the COVID-19 vaccine can call (833) 308-1988 and the transportation service should arrive in 30-60 minutes.

Vaccine for Children
Cook County rolled out COVID-19 vaccination for children (ages 5 to 11 years) in early November through the Cook County Health locations after the approval of vaccination by FDA. Patients and members of the community will be able to make an online appointment for a COVID-19 vaccine for a 5–11-year-old child by visiting vaccine.cookcountyil.gov. Children under 18 must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian in order to get vaccinated. CCH continues to offer COVID-19 vaccinations for people aged 12+ and booster shots for eligible adults.
The vaccine is free for everyone, regardless of insurance or immigration status. Everyone age 5 and older is encouraged to get vaccinated!

The nominations for the 2022 Peggy Montes Unsung Heroine Awards have begun.
The Cook County Commission on Women’s Issues holds the annual Unsung Heroine Awards annually in recognition of Women’s History Month in March.
Nominees must be a resident of the County Board district from which they are nominated. They should be women who, either in a professional or volunteer capacity, have made significant contributions to the well-being of their community for which they have not received widespread recognition. Elected officials are not eligible for consideration.

ARPA Initiatives and Allocations |
|
In the December Board of Commissioners meeting, the Cook County American Rescue Plan Act Initiatives and Allocations (#22-0637) was introduced and referred to the Finance Committee. This item provides the proposed short-term initiatives to be funded under ARPA in Cook County. The Finance Committee will have a dedicated meeting to further discuss the item on January 10th.

Amendment to the Ethics Ordinance |
|
The Board of Commissioners approved the amendment to the Ethics Ordinance (#20-4404) which include changes required by the passage of recent Illinois ethics legislation. The ordinance strengthens numerous areas including dual employment, sexual harassment, and conflict of interest among other areas.

To bring joy and smiles to the seniors currently living in senior homes in the 7th district, Commissioner Alma E. Anaya was invited to the holiday celebrations at various senior facilities which followed COVID-19 safety protocols. Commissioner Anaya provided packages with personal protection material along with a token to wish them a happy holiday season. |

Monthly Food Distribution |

Anaya, State Representatives Theresa Mah, and Aaron Ortiz will continue to host food distributions in 2022 every first Thursday of the month at San Miguel Community Center located at 1936 W. 48th St. This month more than 400 families received food and resources. Next food distribution is on Thursday, January 6th! |

Cook County Jail Divisions 1 and 1A Demolition Update |
|
The Cook County Bureau of Asset Management (BAM) continues with the demolition of Divisions 1 and 1A at Cook County Jail as the demolition contractor makes sure the buildings are carefully removed piece by piece, safely and securely. The demolition project is running on schedule. Demolition of the Division 1 building has been completed and Division 1A building demolition will start in December.
Materials from the building are being sorted before moving to off-site storage and recycling facilities. Trucks are scheduled to haul materials from the work site between 7:00 AM and 3:30 PM. The County’s contractor will continue to use the same methods as with Division 1 to minimize any dust that may occur. Air quality monitoring continues for the remainder of the project.
Residents in the immediate area by the Jail campus have received a door hanger at their properties with more information. Please note the Division 1A demolition start date has been modified to mid-November. For immediate concerns about demolition activity or if you have any questions, please contact 847-378-1704.
