CLASSES BEGIN AT 8:45am
Mark your calendars for October 17 at 7:30pm in the North Campus Reber Center. You won't want to miss Tom Thelen's Victimproof, an anti-bullying presentation for parents including a Q & A.

Thelen has spoken at more than 500 schools and has appeared on NBC, CBS, FOX, and PBS. As a student, he was bullied, but thanks to one teacher he learned how to break free from the bullying cycle. His message shows students how to live a life of respect, responsibility and resiliency and demonstrates to parents how to raise victim-proof kids.

Admission is free. To pre-register, click Victimproof.

Students with disabilities and their parents are invited to attend the Options Fair Monday, October 21, 6-8pm at South Campus.

The Options Fair was established to offer students with special needs an opportunity to meet with colleges and universities, trades and certification programs, as well as agencies that can provide services after high school.

This program is free to the public and no pre-registration is required.

SIGN UP FOR A FREE, EASY HEART SCREENING
Every two years, LT and Young Hearts for Life host free, easy and painless heart screenings for all students. The screening involves a brief three-minute ECG that can detect several threatening heart conditions, such as Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy, the leading cause of death in young people.

After the last screening, LT heard from the family of a junior student. The student's ECG came back with an irregularity, and the family was contacted immediately. They took the student to a children's hospital the following day, where he was diagnosed with Wolf Parkinson White Syndrome, a congenital heart defect that can cause serious heart problems and symptoms such as rapid heartbeat, chest pains and dizziness. The student had heart surgery in June. Fortunately, he is as good as new.

The family said, "We are sharing our story to reinforce how important this program is. We never thought in a million years that our son would have anything but a normal ECG. If we can encourage even one family to get their student screened - we have done our job."

Please consider signing up your student for a free screening. The screenings will be held Thursday, November 7, at South Campus and Thursday, November 14, at North Campus during PE or study hall classes.

This opportunity is strictly optional and is completely free to all LT students - not just athletes. All testing will include separate areas for males and females, with individual booths to ensure privacy.

You may register your child online for the screening at:

Your family will receive your child's results directly via the account you create when you register. LT will not have access to any medical information resulting from this screening. Any concerns identified through the screening process should be a matter of discussion with your own family physician.

Even if your student participated in a previous screening, experts strongly encourage students to be screened every two years.

For those with questions, please review the Young Hearts for Life informative website:  Frequently Asked Questions

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

An undertaking of this magnitude could never be accomplished without the support of many. We will need 200 parent volunteers to assist in the screening process. If you are interested in volunteering 4-8 hours of your time (no medical experience is necessary) either on Thursday, November 7, or Thursday, November 14, please sign up via the YH4L website.

All volunteers sign a confidentiality agreement and must go through a short training on the evening prior to the health screenings. Only the cardiologists who interpret the ECGs have access to the student's test results. LT will not receive ECG results.
LT IS ALL RED THIS MONTH
LT will be adorned in red October 23-31 in honor of Red Ribbon Week, the  oldest  and largest drug prevention campaign in the country, which serves as a vehicle for communities and individuals to take a stand and make a commitment to drug prevention and a personal commitment to live drug free.

LT is recognizing Red Ribbon Week in a variety of ways:
  • October 23 to October 31: Daily announcements relating to Red Ribbon Week will be read over the PA system for students and staff, and public service announcements will be played during lunch periods in the cafeterias to help educate students.
  • Wednesday, Oct 23 (South Campus) & Thursday, Oct. 24 (North Campus): Tables will be setup outside NC and SC lunchrooms asking students to "send a message" to stay drug free and to enter into a raffle!
  • Thursday, Oct 24: Annual WEAR RED day to support the idea of healthy choices by wearing red and encouraging students to participate.
  • Monday, Oct 28: Red Ribbons will be placed in teacher mailboxes to display in their classrooms.
  • Tuesday, Oct 29: The annual Red Ribbon Breakfast for associate schools, community members, and LT staff is an annual event with a presentation from Andy Duran, executive director of Linking Efforts Against Drugs (LEAD), a drug prevention organization which blends coalition and prevention work with youth leadership development.
  • Wednesday, Oct 30: students and faculty will pass out Red Ribbon Week lollipops with this year's theme: Send a Message. Stay Drug Free.
ALL SERVICEMEN/WOMEN INVITED TO ATTEND LT'S VETERANS DAY, WALL OF HONOR UNVEILING
All veterans are welcome to join LT at the upcoming Veterans Day assemblies scheduled for Monday, November 11. The South Campus assembly will be held at 9:15am, followed by the North Campus assembly, which will begin at 12:30pm.

Any and all veterans, as well as those currently serving, will have front row seating. Contact the Student Activities Office at 708-579-6543 with any questions.

After the North Campus assembly, all veterans and their families are invited to attend the official unveiling of the new LT Wall of Honor. See a history of LT's wartime service, a touchscreen monitor where visitors can search for alumni who served, and don't miss a mural of flags painted by students in remembrance of September 11, 2001.
PARENT TEACHER CONFERENCE REMINDER
