August 2019
NEWSLETTER: Homelessness Week, new staff, November TiR visit and more!
At the start of Homelessness Week 2019, we shine a light on people experiencing homelessness. Homelessness is on the rise around Australia, but if we are to address this problem we need greater recognition of the fact that homelessness is the result of the problem, it's not the problem itself.

The problem is with housing affordability, the fact that you cannot live on Newstart, it’s a consequence of health, substance use and mental health services failing often highly vulnerable people. In fact, homelessness is as much an issue of health than it is of housing, which is why this years Homelessness Conference them e is 'Prevention'.

T he significance of Homelessness Week, run nationally by Homelessness Australia , cannot be understated. 2019's message is 'Housing Ends Homelessness'.

Here in Adelaide, we will join with our partners and friends, who share our vision for a fairer world, by attending events like Homelessness SA’s Memorial Service for people who have died sleeping rough and Hutt St Centre's annua l Walk a Mile in My Boots event.

We are also calling for applications from innovative, grassroots social change initiatives that support people sleeping rough for The Funding Network's first eve r Adelaide event . It’s a live crowdfunding event, focused on homelessness and we hope you can join us.

Another way you can help this week is to find the time to participate in the important South Australian Housing Authority’s YourSAy's 'Housing and Homelessness Strategy' survey.

Looking forward, we will be welcoming Dr Nonie Brennan for her Thinkers in Residence visit focused on homelessness in November plus much more!

If you like what you see, we hope you will consider  attending , joining , donating , partnering   or volunteering  to help us inspire action for a fairer world.

Finally, as my last newsletter as Executive Director, I just wanted to say thank you to everyone involved with the Don Dunstan Foundation. It's been a pleasure working with you all. I'm incredibly proud of everything that has been achieved over the past three years and sincerely appreciate all of the well wishes I've received over the last few weeks.

As Don used to say, 'There is much more to be done!' and I couldn't agree more.

Cheers,

David Pearson
