Looking Forward To Getting Back Together!
Greetings Club friends! Once again the summer months have flown by so quickly, but I am excited for the upcoming TCWU season. I hope that everyone was able to find some time on the water and enjoy the company of family and friends.
Our club kept busy this summer with a fun outing on Lake Pepin back in June. We’ve also been busy planning for the upcoming year with an exciting lineup of speakers. Also, I hope you can join us for our fall club outing on Mille Lacs on September 12th. Fall is a great time to fish! Please remember to send us your pictures so we can share on our social media and in our newsletter.
I’m looking forward to seeing everyone and excited to kick off the year with Dave Genz as our speaker for the October meeting. I encourage all members to come to as many meetings as you can and to bring a friend. Our club’s success is in big part because of our members like you!
I hope everyone and their families continue to be safe and well. Looking forward to seeing you all soon!!

Status of the Fishery
Walleye is the fish of interest to the majority of anglers that visit Mille Lacs Lake. After a series of weak year classes from 2009 through 2012, we have seen good natural reproduction of walleye since then. Of particular note is the 2013-year class, which is the third strongest year class produced since annual sampling began in 1979.
With the restrictive regulations that have been in place in recent years, walleye from this year class have survived very well, and will be a large portion of what anglers catch. These walleye currently range from about 17 to almost 22 inches in length. The 2017-year class is also strong. Anglers will notice a fair abundance of these walleye, which average about 13 inches in length. In addition to these fish, good numbers of older, larger walleye are also present. The oldest walleye sampled last fall was a 23-year old female that was about 27 inches long.
Anglers experienced very high catch rates of walleye through the summer of 2019 and the following winter. These high catch rates were the result of the low abundance of prey species (primarily small yellow perch). We anticipate that these high catch rates will continue into the early part of the summer.

The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources has confirmed zebra mussels in the following lakes:
- Bowstring and Ball Club Lakes in Itasca County
- Aaron lake in Douglas County
- Long Lake in Becker County
- Pickerel Lake in Otter Tail County
- Big Watab in Stearns County
- Farm Island Lake in Aitkin County
Interesting note that Water from Bowstring Lake flows into Sand Lake and eventually into the Bigfork River and north to Hudson Bay. Zebra mussels were confirmed in Sand Lake in 2013 and have been confirmed downstream nearly 20 miles in recent years. Navigation from Sand Lake to Bowstring is not common, due to the nature of the connecting river and water levels. The DNR and Itasca County invasive species programs have paid close attention to Bowstring Lake because of its close proximity to waters where zebra mussels were previously confirmed.
Reminder that Minnesota law requires boaters and anglers to:
- Clean watercraft and trailers of aquatic plants and prohibited invasive species.
- Drain all water by removing drain plugs and keeping them out during transport.
- Dispose of unwanted bait in the trash.
Some invasive species are small and difficult to see at the access. To remove or kill them, take one or more of the following precautions before moving to another waterbody:
- Spray with high-pressure water.
- Rinse with very hot water (120 degrees for at least two minutes or 140 degrees for at least 10 seconds).
- Dry for at least five days.
Zebra mussels can compete with native species for food and habitat, cut the feet of swimmers, reduce the performance of boat motors, and cause expensive damage to water intake pipes.
