The last BobBlast was all about childhood memories… and using those memories as inspiration for paintings! I received many positive emails, so I thought we should have a Part Two and revisit another childhood memory - The Circus!
Today, when the circus comes to town, I still go so I can watch the tents go up! I love meeting the performers - they become my models for painting with their imaginative costumes and outrageous make-up. In painting the circus, my intention is to express the joy I have for these memories and capture the theatrical characters entertaining me under the Big Top. For today's demo I have chosen one of the circus performers… a Clown!
To get myself ready to paint, I start journaling about the Concept I want to convey. Then I focus on a title for the painting, establish the Composition and the Color Combination (from my Goof-Proof Color Wheel). For added fun, I have ready some collage materials and acrylic gel medium as my glue.
Now the fun begins! Watch the video and you can see me start a loose, abstract interpretation of the title; I continue with loose layers of paint throughout, until I come to an image I've not done before. I have found the small, warm-up paint sketching is another way to stretch the imagination.
Today my demo begins on a 16x16 inch canvas of very abstract brush work to establish the general, overall composition. I select a color combination by choosing a dominant color on my Color Wheel. I follow the instructions and add the focal point color and the two spice colors. I stop painting when it begins to look like the title! Stop too Soon!
Paint what you love to remember. You are never too old to be a kid again!
