Using one eiruv for two Yomim Tovim

The ideal way to arrange an eiruv tavshilin is by preparing foods exclusively for the eiruv on Erev Yom Tov. Nevertheless, one may--l’chatchilah--use previously prepared foods (or foods that were prepared for other reasons), as long as the eiruv is arranged on Erev Yom Tov. B’dieved, an eiruv that was prepared before Erev Yom Tov is also valid. Additionally, an eiruv which was prepared for one Yom Tov can be relied upon for another Yom Tov, provided that the eiruv is at least the size of two k’zaisim (the amount necessary for two eiruvi tavshilin).

Saving food for Shabbos

According to one opinion in the Gemara, the purpose of eiruv tavshilin is to serve as a reminder not to eat all of the prepared food on Yom Tov, but to leave a portion to eat on Shabbos. By preparing a portion on Erev Yom Tov for Shabbos (the eiruv), one will be mindful to leave food over for Shabbos. This view prompts the question of whether an eiruv would be necessary any time that a day of rejoicing and eating special foods (e.g. Rosh Chodesh or Purim) falls on a Friday. A reminder not to eat all of the food before Shabbos would seem like a good idea at such times. The Achronim explain that an eiruv is not needed on a weekday, since one can simply purchase more food for Shabbos if all the prepared food is consumed.

Cooking for Shabbos when the eiruv is lost

The eiruv foods must remain intact until one has finished his Shabbos preparations. If some of the eiruv was lost or eaten, it remains valid as long as there is a k’zayis left. If less than that amount remains, the eiruv is no longer valid and it is forbidden to do any Shabbos preparations. If the eiruv diminishes to less than the minimum size (or gets lost) while one is preparing a food for Shabbos, one may complete the task that has already been started. If a person has some foods prepared for Yom Tov and the eiruv was invalidated, he may redesignate those foods for Shabbos and cook additional foods for Yom Tov.

  • Once the eiruv foods are designated, the proper method of arranging the eiruv is as follows: A brochah is recited, followed by a text stating that through this eiruv, cooking, baking, insulating food, lighting candles and other necessary preparations may be performed on Yom Tov for Shabbos.

  • The poskim disagree about whether an eiruv is valid if the text was omitted.

  • An eiruv only allows a person to cook and bake on Friday. It is forbidden to do any melacha on a Thursday that is the first day of Yom Tov.
