September 5, 2019 @ 6:00 pm - 9:00 pm
Aviary, 48 South Street, Jamaica Plain
Aviary Gallery is pleased to present It’s Not Time For That, an exhibition of new works by Rosie Ranauro. Please join us for our Opening Reception: September 5, 2019, 6-9pm at our location, 48 South St. Jamaica Plain, MA!
"It's Not Time For That" explores the endeavor to inhabit the body in the present moment. In these works, the figure wraps and unwraps as parts of the whole come together and release in a conversation with one another. The artist uses a personal language of symbols and repeated motifs to explore the tension and balance inherent in this process - the figures are joyful and sorrowful, protective and open, at rest and in movement. Ranauro often leverages humor as an access point for the viewer to engage and converse with the works.
This evolving body of work is a gentle call from the self, to the self, to say "Don't go away, stay here, you're here right now in your body. It's not time for that.”
Rosie Ranauro is an interdisciplinary artist whose work explores how pain informs the self. Her works are created during exploratory cycles of performance and painting, making use of touch and play to access embodiment.
Ranauro holds a BFA in Painting from Massachusetts College of Art and Design and lives and works in Boston, MA. She has shown locally and internationally, most recently as an Artist in Residence at The Ou-telier in Duncan, British Colombia.

- Book Club - Where the Crawdads Sing
September 5, 2019 @ 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm
JP Knit & Stitch
Join us on the first Thursday of every month for the JPKS Bookclub!
At our next book club session, we will be discussing Where the Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens. For years, rumors of the “Marsh Girl” have haunted Barkley Cove, a quiet town on the North Carolina coast. So in late 1969, when handsome Chase Andrews is found dead, the locals immediately suspect Kya Clark, the so-called Marsh Girl. But Kya is not what they say. Sensitive and intelligent, she has survived for years alone in the marsh that she calls home, finding friends in the gulls and lessons in the sand.
We can't wait to hear your take on the book AND help us pick our next read!

September 12, 2019 @ 5:30 pm - 7:30 pm
Jamaica Plain Branch of the Boston Public Library, 30 South St, Jamaica Plain, MA 02130, USA
On Softer Ground: Patchwork Landscapes by Annie Cardinaux at the Jamaica Plain Branch Library
The Friends of the Jamaica Plain Branch of the Boston Public Library in partnership with Uforge are pleased to announce a new exhibition as part of their rotating art program. After soliciting proposals from a range of local artists, a selection committee comprised of community members and BPL staff has chosen six exceptional artists to fill its gallery space over the course of 2019. This fall, the library presents the first solo exhibition of Jamaica Plain-based fiber artist
Annie Cardinaux.
First learning quilting techniques from her aunt, Cardinaux has turned her longstanding passion for textile crafts into a series of vivid wall hangings. She employs traditional sewing and quilting techniques to create contemporary patchwork landscapes of rolling hills, expansive fields, quiet lakes, and stately tree groves, pulling inspiration from the natural world while working with uniquely saturated fabric color palettes. The result is slightly abstracted and at times playful, made all the more personal for the clear presence of the artist’s deft hand in each composition’s lines of thread. The quilted texture of the work offers an aesthetically engaging experience reminiscent of a familiar domestic setting, often evoking nostalgia and surprise from viewers.
On Softer Ground: Patchwork Landscapes by Annie Cardinaux is on view from September 6 through October 31, 2019, with a public reception to be held on Thursday, September 12, 5:30 - 7:30 PM. The library is open Monday-Wednesday 10-6, Thursday 12-8, and Friday-Saturday 9-5 (closed Sundays). The exhibition space is located on the lower level.
This exhibition is proudly sponsored by The Friends of the Jamaica Plain Branch Library.

- White Privilege: Can You Explain that to Me
September 12, 2019 @ 6:00 pm - 7:45 pm
Jamaica Plain Branch of the Boston Public Library
Are you uncertain what people mean when they refer to "white privilege"? Have you ever wondered where the idea that white people have certain privileges, just because of the color of their skin, came from? Are you interested in digging a little deeper and broadening your understanding about what actions you could take once you do understand more? Join us for two 2-hour conversations exploring the topic of "white privilege", its origins, and what it means today. Using the articles "White Privilege: Unpacking the Invisible Backpack" by Peggy Macintosh, "What is White Privilege, Really?" by Cory Collin, and the podcast series from Scene of the Radio, "Seeing White", we will investigate these ideas, their meanings in relation to our own experiences, and next steps individuals can take to further their understanding. It is recommended that participants read the two articles prior to the first meeting and listen to as much of the podcast series as possible before the second meeting. Register here for both dates (only 8/8 listed):
