Greetings all!
Fall is upon us and it’s back to school time. For anyone in business, every day is back to school when you’re a life-long learner! In the spirit of that, we have two upcoming professional development opportunities to let you know about:
NAWBO-CA Propel
Propel 2020 is being planned! Reserve May 4 & 5 on your calendars — and watch for the early bird registration. If you’ve not been to Propel before, it’s our annual conference held in Sacramento that brings together attendees from across the state and our 11 NAWBO chapters here in California. Propel is one of the only conferences in California that advocates for women businesses in the areas of public policy and board service. Propel focuses on connecting and growing attendees' relationships with like-minded entrepreneurs, expanding spheres of influence, and business-building advice. It also creates opportunities for mentorship for seasoned WBOs to share past experience and young women CEOs to share current millennial business trends. We always incorporate professional development that expands your leadership competencies and that boosts technological applications to make your business run smoothly and efficiently. As well, we connect you to our key Corporate Partners for cutting-edge resources dedicated to helping you grow your business. Be sure to attend!
Will be held Oct. 13 - 15 in Jacksonville Florida this year. Success is a combination of being at the right place, at the right time, and doing something about it. For entrepreneurs and women in general, that place and time is right now. Women business owners are starting and growing companies at a pace faster than ever before. We are at the table in more executive boardrooms, speaking out on more important personal and business issues and becoming key contenders and players in Washington, DC and in our state and local government offices. And we are paying forward this success by reaching down to the next generation and out to women around the globe to bring them up. Join hundreds of women entrepreneurs as we come together to capitalize on this incredible moment in time, and do something about it. The time is now!

NAWBO-CA?
While chatting with some #NAWBOsisters last month at a NAWBO-LA event, it became
clear
that NAWBO-CA and its relationship to the California chapters we represent is
UNclear
. Here’s the scoop: NAWBO-CA is the state-level entity comprised of our 11 chapters here in California, which are: Bakersfield, Inland Empire, Los Angeles, Orange County, Sacramento Valley, Santa Barbara, San Diego, San Francisco Bay Area, Silicon Valley, Central Coast, and Ventura County. If you are a member of any of these chapters, you are automatically a member of NAWBO-CA! NAWBO-CA focuses on representing our chapters’ interests at the state level in terms of Advocacy and Public Policy, as well as connecting our chapters to statewide corporate partners who offer resources, solutions, and key relationship building. That’s why NAWBO-CA has a Sacramento office.
SB 826 Update
Over the last couple of months, national publications have touted the success of SB 826 and its impact. Unfortunately, not all entities support this groundbreaking opportunity for women to serve on corporate boards. On August 9, 2019, Judicial Watch, a Washington-based conservative activist group, filed a lawsuit in Los Angeles Superior Court on behalf of three California taxpayers saying that spending taxpayer money enforcing the law (SB 826) is illegal under the California constitution. The group is suing California Secretary of State Alex Padilla, whose office is responsible for SB 826 compliance and enforcement. In response to the lawsuit, Senator Hannah Beth Jackson and Senate pro Tempore Toni G. Atkins issued
this statement
.
We are working with the Senator’s office and will keep you posted on the progress of the lawsuit. For now, we are taking a watch-and-see approach.
Here’s a great
Newsweek
article about the situation. Please hold for now on any public postings or digital responses. More soon!
Warmly,
Hilary Lentini
President, NAWBO-CA
Founder & Creative Director, Lentini Design & Marketing, Inc.
Past President, NAWBO-LA
Governor-Appointed Board Member, California Workforce Development Board
